About Me:
I've been knitting--Continental style--for almost half a century, and I generally feel able to knit anything that strikes my fancy. Even so, there's always so much more to learn about what can be done with two sticks and a string! I'm absolutely hooked on Kelley's podcasts, because even when the topic sounds pretty mundane, she's always got something fresh and interesting to say about it.

That's Cesare with me in the photograph--one of two cats named after the Borgias. Being an utter monster, he's very well named. I can't think why so many knitters are cat lovers, when one considers that cats are the natural enemy of knitting.

Evening with the Yarn Harlot

Just got back from a signing with Stephanie Pearl-McPhee. She's even better in person than she is in her writing, in the sense that her comic timing and delivery are absolutely impeccable. She even had the booksellers rolling in the aisles, and they clearly had a good time at the event. (I used to work at that bookstore, and I know these people. I can tell when they're really enjoying it or just putting up a front, and they were digging it.) I also had a nice time chatting to a young man who was… Continue

Greencastle Fleece Fair

Went to the Fleece Fair in Greencastle, Indiana last Friday with my partners in crime. I had never been to one of those events before, and am I ever glad I went! Not only did I score on yarn, but I picked up a good dyeing tip that I can't wait to try. It turns out that you can dye wool with fiber-reactive dye without cooking it, so you don't have to worry about the pigment's breaking down. To celebrate this new knowledge, I bought a couple of skeins of wool-cellulosic yarn to dye that I would no… Continue

Have knitting, will travel!

Off to Albuquerque today with my nascent shawl in my bag and Pride and Prejudice on the iPod! It doesn't get any better than this!

New Knitting Resolution

OK, so I just frogged the first 85 rows of my Corner to Corner Shawl. "Why did you do that, Roxane?" I hear you ask. Well. I had screwed up at some point--I'm guessing at about row 70 or so--so I intended to dutifully unknit about 15 rows. Gentle reader, it is very hard to unknit a lace pattern on laceweight yarn (Alpaca Cloud in this case) on size 3 needles. My eyes really aren't up to it any more, even though my eye doctor says I'm 20/20 with my glasses, and even the point of the Harmony wood… Continue

Thanks for getting back with me so soon. Even after I read your explanation I was baffled, because it wasn't working for me. Then I started reading your explanation the second time, I realized that I totally misread the instructions - instead of k2, I was seeing k2tg. Where I saw that I do not know. Sorry for getting in a panic.

Thanks, I'd really appreciate the help. Could be that I'm just not looking at it right.

You recently knitted the Fan Kimono from "Knit Komono" I am starting the Komon Kimono, and I think there is an error in the pattern instructions. The 1st row of the pattern is suppose to make an increase, but I don't think it does. Could you take a look at it and see what you think. I've only been knitting a short time, but I have found so many errors in printed patterns and I can't figure out what to do about this one. I would appreciate your advice.

You have a nice page. Cute cat!! I like the cool stuff you have knitted. I especially liked the Afghan sweater and the cardigan from hell. I am from Anderson Indiana, so it's always nice to run across a fellow Hoosier!

Hmmm..."one stash wonder" books. Never thought of checking those. Do you have any that you would recommend, especially ones that have patterns for the beginning knitter? (I find I'm a basic coward when it comes to trying new things...a sign of aging, I'm afraid. *sigh*)

Hi Roxane! I live on the Southside...in Greenwood. What a surprise to find a fellow Hoosier in Knit Picks! I'm a beginning knitter and am just about to start my first lace project. I'm a little nervous about venturing away from hats and scarves, but I have to start somewhere and I guess now is the time. May I include you in my "Friends" list? I would like to pick your expert brain once in a while if I get stuck. Would you mind? Happy knitting!! Ruthie ;-)

I'm a "picker" too, but can't seem to keep 2 strands of yarn in my left hand without getting them all twisted together. I bet it is much faster knitting fair isle the way you do it.

Thanks for the input on the Comfy yarn. I reviewed the items you have knitted, and am in awe. I've only been knitting about 2 years, and I just love the sweaters you have created. Beautiful.

I'll probably use the Comfy for the kimono as soon as I get to start it. I have two other projects in the wings prior to getting to do something for myself.

Your profile says that you have been knitting continental style for 50 years. I assume some one taught you when you were young. I've figured out the mechanics of knitting continental style, but just can't seem to pick up the speed that I would like. Wish I had some one who could show me how it's done..

Thanks so much for your input. Even though I'm new at this art, I knit daily... just can't seem to think about anything else.

By the way, I liked the Fan Kimono once I saw all the projects in the book, but I liked the style of the Komon better... I didn't want something that looked that bulky.

Thank you, but I haven't even tried Fair isle or entralac. That man's sweater and vest are absolutely fantastic! The pattern is so small and to top it off that sweater is such a big project. It is so much fun trying new things. What is your favorite thing to knit?

Your work is amazing and inspiring! I hope to one day have close to the skill level that you have. Thanks for sharing!
