Lambspun has a few open teas during the week. I go to the one on Tuesday nights and people are always dropping by looking for help. They end up staying for years. All levels of skill are represented and the experts are more than happy to share the love.

Socks look far more complicated than they are. I mostly use varigated yarn and make very simple socks (stockinette stitch) with no pattern. I would suggest that you get a good sock book particularly one with pictures. (Ann Budd has a terrific new one. Also Lucy Neatby and Charlene Schurch have good ones.) Decide whether you want to use double pointed needles or two circular needles. Use sock yarn with some nylon in it as these can be put into the washing machine and dryer and they make a stronger sock than yarn with mohair, alpaca, etc. People usually panic about turning the heel, but if you just follow the directions you'll have it done before you know it and will be wondering what the fuss is. Socks can also be done from the toe up. I've only done this once or twice, but many people swear by it, particularly if they are they are not sure if they have enough yarn. I like longish cuffs so I make sure I have 350-400 yards to start with and have never run out.

Jump in, and good luck!
