First, thank you for the compliment on my dress. I looked for photos of your projects, but didn't see any... I am new to this Knitting Community and you are the only knitter I have talked to online, so am I looking in the right place? (I clicked on your photo and looked at your page.) I was really excited to start a knitalong being somewhat cut off from the normal "guilds" of the USA that I might join, but so far I have not found an "active" group, or at least one that responds to questions. I did order this EZ Almanac Book and plan to try to do some type of knitalong of her stuff... we shall see.
Secondly, to answer your question, I was not a knitter when I came here so I brought nothing with me in the way of supplies. I still managed to find some yarn here, but just not much in the way of choices. It is possible to have things shipped here but tricky and expensive due to the fact that we live on a VERY small island and everything must be shipped or flown in and given the smallness of said island, that doesn't happen cheaply here. For me it is quite easy because my husband's company (based in the US) ships stuff for us here at their expense. It must be "safe" items and there is a list, but it is possible to get yarn. No needles, but yarn is okay. Having said all that, I am not sure where you will be in Africa, but I do know lots of other expats here in Bahrain that are from South Africa and they are HUGE into wooly type projects so perhaps you will find that you can order from South African shops that will send yarn to you within Africa. That would seem the easiest to me. The next time I am around those South Africans I will ask for you.
Sorry if I have seemed to ramble a bit, but it is nice to talk with another fellow knitter, and one that is moving overseas, no less. ;)
I will be teaching school in Burkina Faso this fall. Although I am in the largest city (Ouagadougou), I dont think there is a lot in the way of shopping. It is my first time teaching overseas, although I have travelled around mostly in Europe. I packed a bunch of yarn with my overseas shipment, but know I will eventually need more. Is it possible to order from European countries? I have not found anyone in the US who ships to Africa!! Do you buy your yarn at a lys?
It really depends on where you are. Where are you moving too? If you are moving to the middle east, like me, I would say that it is possible to find yarn, it is just generally more expensive and less choices than what you would find in the states.
I would love to hear about where you are going. Is this your first time to live out of the states? If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
