Spring Break

I'm off to Ohio to visit my parents. I have to do the driving there. Nine hours with children 7 and 9 years old, and no knitting!! My husband is meeting us there and driving home. Then I can knit!!

WHERE DO YOU KNIT?

I was looking through the pictures hoping for some inspiration for a new project when I saw a great picture of hkymum64 knitting while camping. It made me laugh and think of all the places that I've taken my knitting. I too have knitted while camping, although it is very hard to get the smoke smell out of your project. I knit all summer while sailing although again to the detriment of my project as the salt spray makes things rather sticky. I would love to hear where you knit and how it affects your work.

My Ravelry invitation has arrived!

Last week, in all the hubbub of the school play, my Ravelry invitation arrived. I didn't know anything about the site except that many Knit Pick members are also ravelry members. It's very interesting how you can organize all your knitting projects. When I explained all the cool features to my husband, his comment was "If you send so much time typing every thing up when do you have time to knit?" These questions go out to all the Ravelry members: 1. How do you use the site? 2. Do you find it useful?

Sound of Music

I have had no knitting time lately!!!!! I've been spending all my time altering costumes for my children's elementary school production of The Sound of Music. Last night I hemmed 8 skirts. Today I have to alter the last adult gown into a child sized gown, add some velcro to Lisel's curtain play dress, and fix a nun's habit. I was going to the school and iron everything, but my daughter was up vomiting last night. The poor little girl is home from school and mom needs a nap! I have done nothing but sew and help out at the school. Tonight is the first performance and two more tomorrow, then back to normal. My house is a disaster, I have piles of laundry, and a huge list of household chores to do. I don't think I'll get much knitting done next week either. I can't wait to have my house back to normal. My friend mentioned that she needs a co-chair for the Science Fair.... Is it going to start all over again????

iPods

Lately, I have been listening to books on my husband's iPod. What a great way to spend time!!! I find I enjoy the household chores much more while distracted by steamy romance or lively adventure. I also get the chores done quicker which leaves me more time to knit while listening to my book. Knit Picks podcasts are also a lot of fun to listen to. I asked my family for my own iPod for Mother's Day. I even looked up the dimensions for the new iPods and knitted a bag for it. I was checking out some of the knitting videos on youTube and discovered a way to cast onto 2 circular needles at once and knit in the round creating a bag with no seams whatsoever! What a great project! I learned something new, finished a project in a couple of hours, and used up the scraps of some beautiful Japanese yarn. Tonight, my husband surprised me with my own iPod. He wanted his back.

About Me:
I have been knitting for about 3 years and it was love at first knit. I have 2 children ages 7 and 9 who hate to wear sweaters. I'm finishing my first pair of socks and I think I've found something the children will love.

I'm so glad that you like them - so does my husband. Yes, they are very soft. The yarn was a real pleasure to work with, and I will be interested to see how well it wears. The Regia Silk is 55% Merino, 20% silk, and 25% Polyamid; the KnitPicks is 70% Merino and 30% silk.

(I want to try the KnitPicks version as soon as the current sock yarn stash dwindles ... at least a bit....)

Silk is a lot tougher than it looks (parachutes, e.g.), so I'm hopeful.

BTW: a sailboat! I am jealous.

Delighted to hear my method is working for you. Best regards.

Amy, I just wanted to drop you a note to let you know that two photos of the socks I referred to earlier as having been done in the Magic Loop method have been posted. (See "Regia Silk Cocoa.")

The stitch pattern for these was taken from Ann Budd's Broken Rib Socks (pattern available at http://www.knittingdaily.com/freepatterns/legwear/Broken_Cable_Socks_304-1.html) but using my own pattern otherwise. (They are for my husband, and the measurements for his foot are quite different than those of the pattern for a woman's foot, as you might imagine.)

I decided to use the Magic Loop method because the placement of the cable crossing shifts back and forth in the Broken Rib pattern. I had never tried the method before, but I really noticed an increase in speed of progress for this specific pattern using it because I did not have to re-think the best division of stitches around my needles.

The socks I'm knitting now are a three-stitch repeat ("Supple Rib" - in Vogue Dictionary of Knitting Stitches (the old paperback version) it's on page 35), so I am back to using a 5-needle set of DP's.

Just thought you might want an update. Hope your own socks are bringing you as much joy as making mine do for me!

Thank you for the compliment on the Aran sweater. Believe it or not, I started that sweater six years ago.! As a working mom, I don't get as much time to knit as I'd like, and I knew that sweater would be a challenge when I started it. I love knitting cables, though, so it didn't really occur to me how much time it was taking me to knit. Each winter I hoped it would be the year I would get to wear it through the cold New England winter season, but I'd still be knitting on it come spring. For this sweater, I used a 100% virgin wool yarn of worsted weight - Reynolds Candide. It has proven to be a nice rugged yarn for this project and will be perfectly suited for the intent I have to wear this sweater as an outer layer when spending time outside. I didn't know much about woolen yarns available back when I began this sweater and might possibly choose something softer if I made it now, something from a merino wool, perhaps, but I still will enjoy this sweater! It is from the book Two Sticks and a String by Kerry Ferguson.

yes my family laughs , as all males, but mom knits everywhere. I always have socks going in the console of the van. My fave place to knit is the hockey arena as my son plays rep....keeps me from listening to all the hockey politics and keeps you warm at the same time. On the deck in the summer is also kool......

I actually played brain age every single day last year-until xmas and puzzle quest! I play mostly puzzle games. I used to feel guilty about playing but now I refuse! My hubby enjoys sports and I enjoy my ds!
My kids have ps2's and ds. Today, in about 1 hour, we are driving up to phx to pick up a truck for my teenage son. Ugggg. He got a job so he gets a vehicle! He's 16 so it's his first. I think I would rather get him a WII!!!!! It's mom shock. My oldest wasn't interested in either working or driving while he was home but this one................!

Hi!

This is one of my sweet little alpacas - his name is Milton. He's 2 years old and is a light fawn color. I've just started planning out a sweater that I want to knit with his wool - he's a real cutie.
I'm sorry I didn't reply to you sooner - I actually tried to...but I just realized that I added my comment to you back on my own page. I'll get better at this soon.
