I am 61 years of age. I have been knitting and crocheting for about 25 years. I got started by my daughter. She was ten years old at the time and wanted doll clothes for her barbie doll. So I went to a yarn shop and took lessons and I've been going ever since. I now knit mostly, my preference. But I do crochet just to remember how to do it. I would love to chat with other knitters.

HI MARYANN , MY NAME IS PATTIE I JUST JOINED THE GROUP. DID YOU FIND YOUR SIZE 1 STRAIGHT NEEDLE? IF NOT I HAVE 2 PAIRS AND WOULD LIKE TO SHARE ONE WITH YOU. OR TRY PUTTING A STITCH HOLDER ON THE END OF A DOUBLE POINTED NEEDLE AND USING IT AS A STRAIGHT NEEDLE TO CAST ON YOUR STITCHES. HAVE A FUN KNITTING DAY. MY GREAT NEPHEWS AND NEICES CALL ME PAT PAT.
Hi Mary Ann, how are you? I spent most of yesterday at Manchester Hospital for a seminar. What a nice hospital! The seminar was a Trauma Nurse class I am taking for my job. It is a two day course( two consecutive Fridays) . I work in the ER at Griffin Hospital. Two other nurses took the class with me. It was very good, but very long . But they had one tooo many really graphic pictures as part of the power point presentation(nature of the beast I guess) and I had packed pizza for lunch. Not good:) oh well, thats nursing.I am also taking another class on Monday and Tuesday so until the two classes finish and the tests are done I put my knitting on the back burner:(.My sock swap doesn't start until June 1st and I have 3 months to finish, so that will work out perfect. What yarn store do you visit Westport. That sounds like a fun little day trip......hmmm. I have a few days off coming up.. Did you start your socks yet? Did you read Kelley's latest blog? I think I want to check out the book holder.... There's always something new and I love gadgets....Hope you have a good weekend.....Leah
I am so sorry that I am just now replying to your post!! I was cleaning up my email and saw this. so I did not mean to be rude:).. I have lived in Conn for most of my life and am definitely a New Englander.I am actually going to Manchester this Friday ( and next Friday) to take a class at manchester Hospital.Small world. So nice to meet you, and I promise not to take so long to reply next time! I love to knit and I am about to start a sock swap on Ravelry. I am very excited about it. I am going to TRY to make two socks at once..... Say a prayer!:) oh well, hope this note finds you well... Leah
It sounds like you and I have shared the same experiences involving lace. I've always loved lace but struggled with it and thought it was my fault. After we developed the Harmony needles with such nice sharp points, I realized the problem was trying to manage the stitch manipulations with dull pointed needles! Between the sharp points and the slick stickiness of the wood surface (so stitches don't slip off unintentionally) I've become quite a happy lace knitter.
I would recommend that you buy the book Folk Shawls. It has a wide variety of shawls and you can choose just how much lace you want to tackle.
There I was deleting my old e-amil and there you were. I love Knitpicks too. My favorite...Panache... they don't have anymore. Rats!! I've been knitting for years but I somehow am still not a very accomplished knitter. I frog more often than most others do, I'm sure. I'm an old granny with a husband of 41 yrears, 2 kids and a bunch of grandchildren. (depending on how you are counting). I'm a nurse but I'm going to retire June 6th. My hubby is a baseball coach...minor league..so I will be joining him.
I usually cast on a size bigger than I'm using for the socks, at least I do if I'm starting at the top of the sock. That way the ribbing is stretchier. i've seen lots of size 2 straights. They even have those at Walmart.
Hi MaryAnn -
I live not too far away in Chelan, WA. I am (on my good days) an intermediate-type knitter. I haven't been brave enough for socks yet. I spent this winter teaching myself to knit hats using two circular needles. Most recently, I have been experimenting with lace patterns. I am learning that I need to pay closer attention and not miss a YO here or a psso there. It's a process, right? Anyway I'd love to chat from time to time. I think the KnitPicks site is a great idea, too. I only recently discovered their yarns and just bought some of the Harmony fixed circular needles in a few sizes. So far, I like them a lot. I have a set of the Denise interchangeables, but the yarn gets hung up at the needle/cord connection point a lot, so thought I'd try the Harmony needle. Well, anyway, nice to meet you...

I just got home from work so I'm pressed for time but will write more later. I love to make socks, too. Are you in Ravelry? I think my identification is just my name. susan
