The easiest way to learn socks is from Knitting for Dummies. I'll send you the directions from this if you like, but your local library probably has a copy. The illlustrations are great, and the instructions very easy to follow. It's how I learned. I got a copy for myself because it covers practically everything in Knitting! You'll need a set of 5 double pointed needles (dpn's) and some worsted weight yarn. I used Lion Brand with 25% wool. I highly recommend using plastic or wooden needles, as wool on metal is very slippery. My personal favorite dpns are made by bryspun and only 5 inches long. It keeps me from jabbing myself at the end of each row. Klutzy. Needle size 7 or 8 is good to start with. Let me know if you still want the basic how-to pattern. But the illustrations in the book are really helpful. Good luck. Let me know how you are doing.
I copied and pasted the message I received from Ravelry. I still have not taken a picture of my shrug, but I shall.

Just saw your post. I'm a RH Queen of a group of 18. We've been together 4 years already. This past weekend we all went to Maui for the Interisland get- together. So Fun!!! There we're only about 200 but it was a terrific weekend. I took my knitting but never had time to touch it. I collect knitting books (don't seem to use them much) and love to go through them and dream about cold weather, a fire, a glass of wine and my knitting.
Hi Doris! What a nice surprise. What kind of knitting projects do you like? I'm sort of on a sock tangent right now. It's never too hot to wear socks - even here.
Hi Doris,
Thank you for adding me as a friend. I am knitting a baby bunting with a hood for my friend Vince's newborn, Steven. The pattern is all garter stitch, but you know us humans -- I've added some cute puppy dogs using a slipstitch mosaic knitting technique. I'll let you know how it turns out.

I shall have a picture taken of myself in my shrug and post it for you. The picture on ravelry is on it being knitted.

I am still hobbling around on crutches, and shopping on the Internet.
