Can we search members by geographic location? Or maybe a 30-mile radius of our ZIP code or something similar?

Reply to This

That would be a great feature--even the same state would be nice.

hey, I just discovered if you type the name of a state in the search box on the knitters page, it will bring up all the knitters that list that state. Cool! Maybe there's even more possibilities.

Does anyone know where to obtain labels to place in pieces that we knit? I used to know a seamstress that put labels saying "Handmade by_______". Have been unable to locate a source.

I did a quick search, and I turned up a few companies online who do this:

http://www.namemaker.com/

http://www.sterlingnametape.com/

http://www.clothinglabels4u.com/

I haven't used any of these services, though, so I won't be able to give you any feedback on them.

Thank you for the info. I did order from namemaker, will see what the products look like when they arrive and will post feedback. Although I've not purchased this type if thing before, the pricing did not seem extreme.

If cost is an issue (cost is a big issue with me!), you can make some with little difficulty. I made up some labels on Open Office Draw and printed it on iron-on transfer paper from my local office supply store; then all you need to do is iron the sheet onto your fabric of choice and cut your labels apart. It doesn't look as professional, but if you are able to sew you can finish them off nicely.

I've seen them in our local fabric stores and also in Herrshners needlework catalog.

Patternworks has added labels to their inventory (I saw it in today's emailed newsletter).
Ten for $8.99, 3 styles that I can see at patternworks.com.

Walmart used to carry several different ones, but they have all downsized or completely gotten rid of their craft departments.
Joanns , hancocks and hobby lobby used to carry them as well.

I'm new to knitting socks and have only made two pair. One pair was knit toe up and the other from top to toe. I prefer to knit toe up but most of the patterns have instructions for top down. Can all sock patterns be adjusted to knit toe up? What is the trick when you get to the heel?
Thanks for any help.

I prefer toe up socks as well. After much trial and error, I finally found a toe, foot and heel that I like and always use. No one sees that part of my sock anyway. So when I find a pattern I like I just do the pattern stitches on the leg. I hate the common heel - it just doesn't fit my foot properly. So I use short row heels. There are many instructions for both short row and common heels - done toe up - online. Google is our friend.
