The key is used to provide torque. You don't twist the key, you use the key to twist the cable tighter. The metal is rather smooth and trying to grip two smooth things to tighten something is very difficult. I have heard it recommended to hold the metal part of the harmony needle as twisting with the metal part can cause it to become dislodged. (Why put more stress on these beauties than you will while knitting.)

You can also use the hole to thread a safety line if you are working on a complex pattern. I have used it with success on a lace project I was working on.

Thank you so much! Now I understand what that key/hole is for. I feel so dumb! Also I like that safety line idea, I would never have thought of that. I am new to circular needles and was trying a new pattern that I confused a wrong/and right side and didn't notice till 6 rows later, so I took it out st by st for 7 rows. Thanks for the tip.

I had heard about using the holes to thread a lifeline (I'm knitting a large lace shawl and threading the lifeline by hand every ten rows takes a loooong time!) but wasn't sure how to go about it. Can you tell me how you've done it? and can I continue to use a fingering weight yarn for the lifeline? I prefer not to use a thinner yarn, because it's harder picking up the stitches off the lifeline with a thinnner yarn should one have to do it...

I use a little loop of thread to pull the lifeline through. I think i might have used some cotton once, but who knows. You just thread it through the loop and knit normally and it will pull along nicely.

Here's our tutorial on using a lace lifeline. You can use any yarn that you can thread through the cable key hole on your Options needles.

Are there any plans to provide a 16" cable for the interchangeable set? My husband just bought me the wood set, which is awesome, but it would be great if there were a 16" cable for hats & sweater necks...

Thanks -- keep up the good work!

Yes yes PLEASE a 16 inch cable!

Many of our customers have asked about the potential for a 16″ cable to go with the Options needle tips. We don’t offer 16″ cables for the interchangeable tips because the tips are too long to create a circle with such a short cable. We have expanded the sizes we offer in fixed 16″ circular needles. They have shorter tips to accommodate the shorter cable. You can find them on our Classic Circular Knitting Needles page. We thank you for your requests and your understanding!

What would happen if the key to the needle tips was somehow attached to say a matching wood harmony needle the size of a crochet hook with a small hole drilled in the opposite for a leather cord for a long necklace

I absolutely love the Harmony dpns for socks. I recently added some circs and I can't believe how much I love them. Who knew I could love the needles as much as the yarn? I've avoided circulars since spending $15 on a pair of Lion Brand that would never ever come unwound no matter what I did. I thought I'd have to pay a lot more to get some "good" circulars, and I just wasn't willing to use a lot of potential yarn money on needles. But after several orders from KnitPicks, I loved everything I got so much (and the needles and cables are priced so reasonably) that I decided to take the plunge. Now I'm converted. The cables are wonderful. Once you unroll them they go exactly where you want them to go. The "joins" (where you screw the cable into the needle) is very smooth, and need I say, the wood is smooth and gorgeous. I feel like I'm knitting with heirloom needles that my granddaughters will be able to use someday. Bravo, Knit Picks!

I totally agree about those other brands of fixed cirular needles with the horrible plastic cord. A friend of mone who gave of knitting for crocheting (who knew that someone would do that!) gave me all her knitting supplies when she heard that I had taken up kntting. I struggled with those awful plastic cords and needles thinking that I was doing something wrong! I can't believe the difference between the KP circulars and the ugly awful things that I was given! Maybe THAT'S why she gave up knitting! Because of those awful circulars! I might let her see mine, maybe even try them, but will NOT lend them out! I'm hooked! (And not with a crochet hook, either!) Maybe if she sees how great they are, she'll come back to knitting!

Is there any plan to have a set of just plain (non-colored) wood needles? I love the idea of these, and I love my Nickel-plated Options, but know that the multi-colored needles would be too distracting for me to enjoy using.
