Doris,
The best book we have for showing first time sock knitters how it all works is I Can't Believe I'm Knitting Socks. At $12.95, it's a little more expensive than a pattern, but is full of step-by-step photos an instructions for knitting socks in different ways so you can find your favorite. I highly recommend it!
I'm sorry about getting back to you so late. I've been away for some months and had trouble with e-mail. I'm uncomfortable sending a pattern I got out of a book. These are copywrited. I believe you may find a basic sock pattern for free on the internet. I'd be happy to share info and trade war stories with you. Please let me know how you are doing.

The easiest way to learn socks is from Knitting for Dummies. I'll send you the directions from this if you like, but your local library probably has a copy. The illlustrations are great, and the instructions very easy to follow. It's how I learned. I got a copy for myself because it covers practically everything in Knitting! You'll need a set of 5 double pointed needles (dpn's) and some worsted weight yarn. I used Lion Brand with 25% wool. I highly recommend using plastic or wooden needles, as wool on metal is very slippery. My personal favorite dpns are made by bryspun and only 5 inches long. It keeps me from jabbing myself at the end of each row. Klutzy. Needle size 7 or 8 is good to start with. Let me know if you still want the basic how-to pattern. But the illustrations in the book are really helpful. Good luck. Let me know how you are doing.
I copied and pasted the message I received from Ravelry. I still have not taken a picture of my shrug, but I shall.

Just saw your post. I'm a RH Queen of a group of 18. We've been together 4 years already. This past weekend we all went to Maui for the Interisland get- together. So Fun!!! There we're only about 200 but it was a terrific weekend. I took my knitting but never had time to touch it. I collect knitting books (don't seem to use them much) and love to go through them and dream about cold weather, a fire, a glass of wine and my knitting.
Hi Doris! What a nice surprise. What kind of knitting projects do you like? I'm sort of on a sock tangent right now. It's never too hot to wear socks - even here.
Hi Doris,
Thank you for adding me as a friend. I am knitting a baby bunting with a hood for my friend Vince's newborn, Steven. The pattern is all garter stitch, but you know us humans -- I've added some cute puppy dogs using a slipstitch mosaic knitting technique. I'll let you know how it turns out.
Hi Doris,
You can also check our tutorial on decreasing for more information on slip stitches. http://community.knitpicks.com/page/page/show?id=1984936%3APage%3A224 Hope that helps!!
You can make a slip stitch in two ways. One is the plain knitting way. Insert the right needle into the first stitch on the left needle but do not knit it. Just slip it off the left needle and on to the right needle. The yarn stays on the back side of your knitting.
The other way is the purl knitting way. Insert the right needle into the stitch on the left needle as though you are going to knit a purl stitch. Slide the stitch on to the right needle. The yarn remains on the front of the work--facing you.
I have not been outside, but we have the heat on. John said it was c-c-cold when he walked this morning. I shall go and get a manicure tomorrow, finally around multiple people. Not just John and Pepper, my Havanese!!

I shall have a picture taken of myself in my shrug and post it for you. The picture on ravelry is on it being knitted.

I am still hobbling around on crutches, and shopping on the Internet.
