So, I called the local(45 miles away) LYS, got directions, and off Lu(DD) and I went in search of a spindle and some fluffy bits. One basic drop spindle, one bag of alpaca(prettiful), one bag of jacob wool(guard hairs explained), and one stringdoll(too cute) later and we were heading home again. The ladies were very helpful and explained the basics. I have researched, viewed every video and site (thanks Peggy!) suggested, and felt ready to finally try this spinning thing out.

OH...My...Gosh!

This totally rocks! Holy cow(alpaca)! What a fun deal this is. I spun(me!) about 5 yards of beautiful crap that I am so very proud of! I showed my son(yeah that's good mom, pat pat), I showed Lu( ok...backing away from mad mummy with weird thing in hand), I showed my hubby(that's nice dear, is there any coffee on?), I called my DD Tabby( great! Good job! now what did you do?), I called my mum in Georgia(I am so proud of you!, honey, but can't you BUY yarn in Ohio?), and finally I showed the mailman(he ran away).

On Abby's site, she reminds you to watch out for the spindle going back the other way and unwinding your twist. Oh that was so cool! That spindle bounces when it hits the tiles!

I don't have any carding tools, so I used the slicker brush for the dog instead. In a pinch this works pretty good. Hair is hair doncha' know. I have just gotten started with this new process and I am already hooked. Dang it. THANKS PEGGY!

Me too! There is something about making the fiber do what you want it to... up to a point, of course, since it obviously has a mind of it's own.

I'm still working on my first batch of rovings, so I'm still not totally satisfied with my results, but they improve every day that I spin. This is marvelous.

I love the whole process. Finding the fluff(I know it is the wrong term...heh heh don't care), cleaning, dying, lining up the little fibers like good little soldiers, and finishing the process. It is relaxing and rewarding. A little creepy though when you start looking at the neighbors fluffy cat....hmmm, what a pretty fur you have...

My family does not get the fact that the process and result draws us and not saving money. It is definately NOT cheaper to spin your own, however, it is much more pleasurable.

Yeh, Peggy is bad for this, getting us all hooked on all sorts of fiber stuff... knitting, spinning... but don't you absolutely love that you can make your own yarn. I do. Susan

Oh My! You say there are videos out there showing you how to do the drop spindle? Could you post a link or message me the link? (assuming it is a free site to view it on) I bought a drop spindle at a local Ren Fair about 2-3 years ago with a little instruction then but haven't touched it since. Life got in the way (how dare it!).

ps... I love how you wrote your blog - I can so see all that being said... lol
