One of the best uses of fingerless mitts I've seen and use myself appeared long ago in Vogue Knitting: the model wore a pair of thinner leather gloves under the mitts. This enables me to wear my leather gloves, which I love but are useless that thin in Michigan winters, and also pick up keys and coins without removing the mitts or gloves. Good for driving like this. Or wear solo for keyboarding in cold offices.

I'm an organist and lots of times I practice in cold, unheated churches and I like to wear fingerless mitts. I also like knitted wristlets. And they're good for driving, too, when you need to be able to pick up your car keys but then the steering wheel is cold. And another good thing about mitts is that you can still show off your rings and not have them snag under the mitten hands or glove fingers. annekat

Do you know, I have never seen anyone wearing fingerless mitts. But I can see how very useful they would be under the cnditions you and various others have mentioned. I did make my husband a pair of convertible gloves - the kind where there are stubby topless fingers and then a sort of cap which can be over the fingers like a mitten, or pushed away to the back of the hand to free the fingers. He likes them for outdoor stuff. I am going to give the fingerless mittens a try just as soon as I finish my current project.

Tina-I love what you have done to the pattern. I have been eyeing this pattern for a long long time. I now know why I haven't knit it yet. I will probably alter the pattern as you have. What a great job, and the City Tweed looks great!

Jill - I have knit 10 pairs of fingerless mittens for my co-workers. Even though we are in-doors, our office climate doesn't work for everyone. It seems like all the ladies I work with are always cold (I am rarely ever cold and seem to always have my fan on). In any case the fingerless mittens work great for drafty work areas where one types a lot. We do a ton of data entry and fingerless mittens work great. They give you the flexibility to do the job and stay toasty warm at the same time.

those are beautiful. i was just thinking, while looking at the new yarn colors, that the color you used would make a great cardigan for the fall. i live in the philadelphia area and i love fall and the colors you can see all around. i should actually make a pair for my daughter, kate, who lives in vermont.

I'm another big fan of fingerless mitts. I wear them inside in the winter for warm hands and wrists (yes, fingers can still get cold, but definitely not as bad). I also wear them over a THIN pair of gloves for the barn so I can have warm hands but more dexterity when needed. Give them a try - you'll be a convert. GREAT gifts as well.

I live in the mid-Atlantic region. I've always had cold hands and have several pair of fingerless mitts. I wear them while reading, knitting, typing, driving.... Your fingers can do whatever you want them to, but you keep your hands warm at the same time. I've used them for decades.... the first pair I had was knit in Peru and had little llamas on them.

I followed the Fetching pattern, just did a couple more cable repeats at both ends.
