Great episode about the different cast on methods. I really appreciated your comments about the backward loop method re: why the length between the CO stitches just grows and grows and...!! It was the method I was taught when I learned how to knit about 40 years ago! Glad to know that there is a use for the backward loop CO: add stitches to project in progress. Long-tail method is the method I use most. I, too, miss Xena's 'good-bye' at the end of each podcast!
Would you believe that the backward loop cast-on was the only one I knew for my first 15 or 20 years of knitting? Yeah, it looks horrible after the first row--but after three or four, it magically fixes itself, and it's nice and stretchy. Quite a few lace patterns call for it because it's nice and loose.
Is Xena not speaking to us? What did we do?

I agree -- the past few podcasts just haven't been the same without that cheery bark "goodbye!" I know she's there while you're recording!
I am so glad that you said it is ok to use the backward loop cast one if the pattern calls for adding stitches onto the existing work. I have been leery of doing that and would knit them on instead. And I missed Xena's bark too, I kept thinking that there was more to come in the podcast.
I could not believe my ears when I listened to this podcast...no Xena barking, "goodbye!" How come? I thought that was a really cute touch. If it's a matter of a vote, I vote to get the bark back.
