It's old news now, but a little while back we decided to freshen up the look of our knitting community. We wanted it to have more of a community feel, so they asked me to design a new banner and change the colors around.
A new banner sounded exciting, so I quickly got to work googling images for inspiration. Thanks to flickr and ravelry there are tons of great knitting shots, but surprisingly the best image I found for my purposes was a stock photo!
Besides having a shirtless male front and center, and using big chunky yarn and straight plastic needles, this photo was perfect (For the record: I don't have a problem with males either knitting or shirtless, or knitting with big chunky yarn and straight plastic needles. In fact, my husband has been knitting a blanket on huge plastic needles and super chunky yarn for a long time. He usually wears a shirt while doing that! It just didn't fit the look I was going for :) ) I asked for volunteer models from the staff here, and found a place to take my picture.
Contrary to popular belief, we here at KP headquarters don't sit around knitting & drinking tea all day, and we really don't have a cozy couch for everyone to sit at. This photo was taken in our cold, dark warehouse on a charming rusty old daybed. We took a video so you you could see for yourself. See it here.
EDIT - Alison gave me the code to embed the video. How fancy!
Hope you like the new look!
PS-- The models in the header are, from L to R, Kerin, Nina, Alison, Marci & Melissa. Angela was in some of the photos, but I ended up using one without her for the final. Sorry, Angela! You are there in spirit. :)
Julia Humphrey-- much to our dismay, we don't have any males working for Knit Picks. There are some men in the company, and we have video proof that they have at least touched knitting needles and yarn, but they weren't interested in posing for the header photo. :) Maybe if/when we get a male knitter here we'll celebrate with a new header photo!
I was just thinking the other day that the header was missing at least one guy. I like the hunky shirtless ones, but could do without the plastic needles. I am sure you must have at least one guy that would be willing to be in the header w/ or w/out a shirt?!?
I think it's funny that I'm 40 weeks pregnant in the photo, and you can't even tell. That must be how celebrities hide their pregnancies--it's all about the front on angle and having knitting in your lap!
