New Lace Samplers and a Lace KAL for Summer!

Lots of you have probably already noticed the new Lace Samplers that have appeared on our website. They come in 4 rich, pretty colorways and each sampler comes with the pattern to knit both the Chinook Shawl (pictures above in the "Deep Sea" colorway) and the Pyrifera Scarf. (Click "more images" on the product page to see more pictures of these!) Well, today Tina launched our Lace Knit Along and I graciously agreed to go on the record, as the designer of the Chinook shawl, to give you all an idea of how it came to be:

Neat, eh? Anyone can join the KAL, you don't have to be working this particular pattern to do so, so come on by! I'd love to see a good mix of seasoned and newer lace knitters there, helping each other along. I'll be there, answering questions about the pattern I wrote and...gulp! Knitting it myself, as a gift for my mother-in-law. Trust me, you don't want to miss THAT!

Nina! I just loved your shawl in lace! I'm a fan lace knitter from Argentina but here we don't have beautiful needles such as the knit picks ones! I'll try to ask a canadian friend to buy them for me and send them by mail because the circular needles I see in their web are simpley BEAUTIFUL! I knit lace in very thin thread, bobbin lace, crochet and jackard sweaters in wool. I love knitting but have not enough time to do it!!! Are you Canadian or American ?! My best to you!

Hi Amy! I think the pattern will be ok for a newer lace knitter--just be patient! Also, be sure to check the errata in the KAL; the pattern is essentially right but there are a few glitches that might be confusing. But there are tons of knitters here and on Ravelry who'll be happy to help you with any difficulties you might run into!

The size 11 needle is for the bind-off only, so you can use any length, a tip on it's own, a straight or a dpn; whatever's handy :). You'll just knit the sts of the 8s with the 11 tip to BO.

Good luck!

Hi Nina!
Im placing my order for this lace sampler kit Thursday, but I'm a little concerned. I've been knitting for about 5 months now, and I've completed several projects. I feel like I have a good working knowledge of the basics but I've never experimented with lace before and I hesitate to order without seeing the pattern first. Is this a pattern for newish knitters? Also, in the kit description it tells me that I need size 8 US 32" circulars and size 11 US circulars but it doesn't specify the length for the cable?
Thanks!!

Hi Janet!

Yes, the pattern comes with the lace sampler, so you should be all set to go. Make sure to check the errata discussion here: http://community.knitpicks.com/group/lacekal/forum/topics/chinook-shawl-errata for some issues with this printing of the pattern.

The pattern will also be available as a download sometime in the next few months, so for anyone who missed the kits or wants to design their own colorways, don't fret!

Does the pattern come with the yarn kit? I ordered both pink and grey, so I am anxious to get going! Just finished the Mariposa shawl a week or so ago and am getting lots of nice comments on it. Janet

Did you post somewhere what colors you were using for this shawl pattern in the autumnal colors?

Hi Hippochic! Tina put a video up on her blog today about how to wear various kinds of lace, and the first shawl we demonstrated was this one, so you could get a look. You can find her post here:

Lovely, lovely, lovely. How to choose?

This is stunning. I'm so tempted by this. I'm working on a lace shawl right now, but a girl can never have too many right?

How does that neckline look when worn? I don't quite get that part.
It is beautiful though.
