Mr. Foster Halloween costume contest!

Mr. Foster likes to plan ahead. It's only July, but he's already wondering what he should wear for Halloween this year.

He thought you guys might be willing to help him out. So here's your mission from Knit Picks and Mr. F, if you choose to accept it-

1. Create a handmade Halloween costume for Mr. Foster using yarn or fabric. Store bought accessories are okay. You are allowed to base your costume on an existing Mr. Foster ensemble, you can get those patterns here for only $4.99 if you don't already have them (the monkey pattern is included too).

2. E-mail a photo of your creation to contests@knitpicks.com before August 31st.

3. Help Mr. Foster pick a winner. In early September, we'll post our favorites, and you can vote for the winner.

4. Check back October 1st when the winner will be announced. We'll also post a slideshow of all of the entries we received.

The winner will get a special Halloween treat from Knit Picks, no tricks, we promise!

Wendy, first of all, if you ask my DH, all my knitting stuff doesn't stay at my cockpit (just what I'm currently working on). And I must admit, he is correct, my stash is everywhere. Needles are in vases. Baskets overflow with yarn. My ball winder is permanently affixed to one of my tables and awaits my saving up for an umbrella swift. I have a small one but it just sits on the table and bounces around while I wind balls.

I bought one Ott with a magnifying glass. I really like it. As I was registering it, I saw all the Ott bulbs. So my regular lamp is now an "Ott" also. The lighting is much, much better to see what I'm working on.

Deb, my little desk has a compartment for storage. Mr. F's Secret Costume is coming along and the Little Creature is perfect! Thank you. My sister is insisting I make a VERY large prop.

I can't wait to see all the secret costumes! I only wish I had time for more!

Cheryl, I'm jealous of your knitting cockpit! It sounds perfect. I sit in an old, uncomfortable rocker with all my knitting junk fighting for space on the top of my grandparents very old radio. Radio is very cool, just not a great area for keeping knitting things. I have been playing around with the idea of an Ott light. How do you like them? Do they work as well as they say? I am so looking forward to seeing all the Halloween costumes, hope your little creature is not causing too many troubles so you can keep knitting. :o) Wendy

Hmmm ... now that you mention it, I do have one of those school-style lap desks, complete with a compartment for storing things ... maybe the microcomputer should live in that ... I could probably keep it within reach. I do have a small table where I put a glass of water or cup of tea, thread cutters, markers, needles, etc. (although at the moment the "etc" is sort of taking over). I was thinking earlier a drawer in that table would be really useful. I can't wait to see Mr. F's Secret Costume, complete with Little Creature ....

Deb, my DH says the chair I use is like a cockpit with everything there at my finger tips. My chair is a nice comfy one that I can curl up in. I have 2 ott lights, needles, scissors, yarn, etc surrounding me. Then I have an old student-style desk with a slanted writing surface on which my laptop sits. I don't have any little munchkins or pets to crawl up in my lap but they would be welcome if there were any in my life at this moment. But the iPod touch is even better. It is being used right now for Mr. F's secret Halloween costume, with a special little creature perched on my lamp overseeing it all. If only all knew who that little creature is! heeheehe!

I like the idea of jotting notes on the computer (I have a notebook and a netbook), but my usual knitting location is sideways on the couch so Rosa the Chewdle can curl up between my knees, and it's quite awkward to use the computer (even the tiny one) in that position. As it is, the paper notebook or pattern I'm working from is usually on end against the couch cushions so I can pick it up to read when I need to. Did I *say* I was in charge here?

Deb, I do the same, I can't sketch things out (not because I can't draw). I've got to experience with the needles. Yes, writing it down as I go, does slow it down, but if I don't it's disastrous. I usually sit with my word processor open. I print out what I have if I'm on the go and also use pencil with a large eraser. Now that I have an iPod touch, I jot notes there.

I agree. I tend to "think on the needles," trouble is, when I'm done, I can't remember what I just did half the time, so I try to write down what I'm thinking on the needles, which slows things down considerably. And I always use a pencil with a large eraser ....

Mr. Foster is absolutely diverting to knit. Haven't had this much fun in a while. I'm 3/4 the way through my costume. I have to say, I'm REALLY pleased with it. Some of it is based on the second set of Foster clothes (for which I bought a kit) but some of the accessories are knit on the fly by me and I was amazed what you can do just thinking on needles. I will say I grabbed the wrong yarn for a red outfit (I had Burgundy Kettle and should have grabbed the Burgundy Stroll) but it looks even better that way. Off to finish it this week.

Met Mr. Foster at Discount Fabrics this afternoon. I had no idea that monkeys liked chiffon. Fun fur, maybe, but chiffon covered with little glitter dots. Holy Opposable Thumb! At $4.99 a yard I guess I can spring for a gown's worth, but I WAS so looking forward to something in a more tasteful tweed.
