Well, I have a new book. It is from Wendy Johnson, aka, Wendy Knits. Toe up socks have not been real fun for me and I have made a sock that used the square toe from the Favorite Socks book by Interweave Press. Ok, a good cast on if you want square or (ballet toes).

While we are discussing casts on. Wendy has some great cast on for toe ups in her book. Since I work at a knit shop, it is important to know all the new and going things in knitting. I tried the provisional cast on. No problem, looks right and works well. However, I know many folks are enchanted with the Judy Becker's magic cast on.

I wanted to try it. All my friends who do toe up socks use it and recommend it. So I cast on. I read the words-but mostly looked at the picture. I should have read more of the words. I ended up with "picot" toes. That is to say my cast on looked like a picot edge after it was knitted a little ways. There is a reason for that. I didn't do something right. I even called my friend, who was on vacation, and hollered for help.

So Tuesday afternoon she comes and dispells this mystery and my frustration for this cast on. After I saw what was done--well I had a "eureka" moment. I got it! Several hours later I did it again, just to be sure I really got it.

Below you can see my progress. I am using a sock yarn from the folks who make Trekking (one of my favs--I have so many) in a "safety man" orange and pink with a twist of yellow. It is bright and wonderful.

Sock projects, summer or anytime are great in these wonderful tins. I have a few hinged tins I find from antique stores. Metal boxes or even some of the hard cardboard boxes wonderfully decorated are perfect for carrying your small projects in.

So I will be out on the back deck, listening to the house not getting cleaned, not feeling guilty, and knitting on these new socks, sipping my tea. Next time we will look at the great heel that looks like my favorite top down heel.

I hope you are all having a grand time, enjoying the sun. Keep Knitting!

Pretty soon I'll be able to do the same (sip tea while sitting on my back deck). First, though, I have to finish staining the new cedar railing / trellis grids. I've estimated that it will take me one day short of forever. LOL

I have Wendy's book, too, and can't wait to try some of her techniques. I am hoping she can help me figure out why I can never make the foot the proper length on the first try, and perhaps offer a good alternative to the ubiquitous short row heel.

Yes, I found one that I can live with, too, and really enjoyed doing a pair of toe upper about two months ago. Good patterns like that are hard to find.

Thank you so much. I may like doing toe up now that there is a heel I like and a start I can live with.
