We're all excited about the release of our Little Bubbles Baby Set , but I think I'm a little bit extra excited, because this was my first big design project here at Knit Picks, and I've been holding my tongue about it until now! But I finally can talk about it, and as this little movie will show, once given the opportunity, I talked, and talked and talked.
And the amazing thing is; I have even more, that I forgot to say! Like, that the sweater patterns come with two sleeve options! And, how cool would it be to knit the pattern for an older child (or an adult!) in Comfy worsted? I can't believe I forgot to say all this stuff!? But, that's what the knitalongs are for, right? For more Little Bubbles and Comfy chatter, check out the Comfy KAL, just started today!
I'm gonna be a grandma and I have to knit this for the Bump. We find out if it is a boy or girl in June and I can hardly wait. I have to get busy with some of my UFO's and WIP's cause I am trying to be good about not going too crazy. OMG this is too cute!! Good Job.
Love the little bubbles set and I hope to join in soon. In the meantime - I also love the sweater you are wearing Nina. I ordered and received the pattern and now I'd love to know what yarn you used - since I assume it was a Knitpicks yarn. Thanks in advance!
Nina, it was great to see a video where you introduced this! I hope you guys do more things like this in the future. I love your sweater, too.
I was considering making the Baby Surprise Jacket for my sister's upcoming baby, but I really like the look of this set and I think I'm going to change my mind. I was already excited about the idea of getting colors from Comfy Sport and Comfy Worsted so I could make a blanket in worsted to match :)
I love your color combinations personally, but there are some 'fashion forward' 2 and 4 year olds in the family! No sense me knitting up a storm if they don't want to wear the clothes!
Oh, yes, I forgot to mention that one of the advantages to waiting for the pattern is that you get to pick your own colors, if you want to! I'm especially excited to see what lovely new combos people dream up when it's available!
Thanks, Nina. I was thinking about Christmas, so there is no rush. I may wait for the pattern and do it for next year. I'm making them something for this summer already with Comfy worsted, and it is fabulous to work with. I'm also liking the idea of doll clothes. I think I need to spend some time in decision mode. The girls also have distinct taste in color so I need to think through what color combinations would be good for each one. I think the pink one is perfect for one. I may need a lilac mist combo and maybe a light green combo. I think my head may explode! haha Too many nice things to work on all at once.....
Thanks Marta! Once the kits sell out, the pattern will be available for purchase, so you could wait until then, when you would purchase the pattern and the yarn separately anyway. If you're not on a tight deadline, and you aren't itching to start right away, this is probably your best bet.
If you are set on starting right away, the only way to get the pattern immediately is in the kit. So, you'd need to find something to do with the sportweight yarn. Maybe you know someone who wants to make 2 sets right now? You could each buy a set, keep your patterns, and she could buy the sportweight yarns off you? You might be able to find someone that wanted to do that through this site or Ravelry. Or, if your granddaughters play with dolls and you don't want to wait for the pattern, you could buy the kit and the worsted yarn and use the sport weight in the kit to make up coordinating doll sweaters? Just some ideas.
Hi Nina.... Here's the rub. The kit comes with Comfy Sport and I would have to have Worsted to make anything for my granddaughters. Can we get the pattern with Worsted weight yarn? Obviously, I would need the pattern, but I wouldn't need the sport weight yarn. How do I cope with that? And I, too, spotted your great sweater in the video. Great job...
Hi Deleria! I sure did make it myself! It's from an old issue of interweave, Winter 2007. If you don;t have that one, though, you can buy it on their website now:
First of all, you'll need more yarn by weight to size it up; probably two balls each of the colors used.
What I would do is knit a good swatch in Comfy Worsted. I'd go for a gauge of about 5 stitches to the inch. Then calculate how many stitches you'll need to get to the right chest size. For a 23-inch chest, that would be about 127 sts. Then, I would knit the size in the pattern that came closest to that in the body sts. It looks like that would be the smallest size.
The other thing you'll want to consider is the width of the armholes. Babies have fatter arms compared to their torsos than toddlers or adults, so baby clothes usually have bigger armholes, proportionally. So, when it's time to divide the body and sleeves, you may want to allot more sts to the body and fewer to the sleeves. if you've made round-yoke sweaters before, you probably know what I'm talking about; if not, let me know and I can explain in more detail!
