Knitting Community

I'm pretty confident that I'm not the only knitter who's been eagerly anticipating the release of this yarn! It combines so many of my favorite fiber-y things: tweed, deep, dimensional heathered colors, and a wool-alpaca blend! So you can probably understand why I was so hot to start a project with it RIGHT AWAY. Those colors above are the ones I'm working with, in the Heavy-Worsted weight. My first order of business was to swatch, which I did with Snowshoe, the lightest color, so I;d be able to see the stitches clearly. Here's what my swatch looked like:

The larger section was knit on US 7 needles, the smaller on on US 6. I had to go down to size 6 needles to get my gauge (I'm a loose knitter) and before blocking, the fabric felt a bit stiff, though still silky and soft. After blocking though, the Alpaca bloomed and the fabric relaxed into a nice drape. Still sturdy, but also soft and snuggly. It's a joy to knit with and I'm glad I took on a large project for this yarn.

Hi Eve!

I find City tweed to be very soft, but I have a high tolerance for animal fibers. I would suggest going somewhere where you can fondle a similar yarn in person- a nice wool/alpaca blend should do. I say this because while i find City tweed as soft as Cashmerino, the fiber content is different and people have different reactions to different fibers!

City Tweed looks perfect for the Central Park Hoodie, but I am concerned about what it feels like. With the hood there would be lots of skin contact. Has anyone with similar issuess done well with City Tweed after it's washed and blocked? There doesn't seem to be a sample card yet. I can tolerate really soft lambswool; Debbie Bliss Cashemerino is a favorite. I'd love more input on City Tweed.

If I'm looking at it right, Jacquard is only available in HW, not DK. Will it ever be available in DK--- that is what I need for my vest.

Susan, the second color from the right is Jacquard. It's one of my favorites.

I'm working on a cardigan right now but want to get some of this yarn too. I'm knitting fast now to get my project done. I have some knitting magazines from the 80's and they have several wonderful patterns in tweed yarn. It seems everything comes around again. Looking forward to this new project.....

Nina, what is the color second from the right? I think that is the one I will need for my vest.

Susan, I might be biased but it IS a wonder to knit with. I love alpaca, and I find it so lustrous and soft. The yarn feels great on the hands and the fabric is really tonal and beautiful.
