What fun we had! We drove down on the 10th ducking and dodging the tornados and nasty storms only to find clouds completely obscuring 129 just south of Blairsville. This is not a big deal you say...Well, this part of the road is more than a little curvy, up high in the mountains. Curvy being defined as 45 minutes or better of switchbacks and hairpin turns with the drop off the mountain a one way trip if you should go offroad. Our visibility was limited literally to about 10 ft ahead of the car with fog lamps on. Shudder.... We passed the Appalacian Trail Head and didn't even see it. There is a lovely museum up there at the top with parking for at least 20 cars right there at the peak. My kids and I almost had a heart attack when a car just appeared in front of us coming from the right out of nowhere. With 10 ft visibility and going very slow, we didn't have an accident but the look on the drivers face as we passed indicated they might have... Good thing the bathrooms were close by in the museum.
We came down out of those mountains and traveled along just fine in the rain until we reached Mom and Dad's mountain and went up into the blackest wall cloud I have seen. We were greeted quite happily while they rushed us inside, slapped a cup of coffee in my hand and were guided toward the stairs to the lower level. Come to find out we arrived with a Tornado Warning going off and we got to rush right downstairs to wait out the weather.
So that was the first hour...I love going to see my folks!
