okay, maybe I would like a steeking badge - I mean if there were such a thing. ;) I'm happy to report that I am so over my fear of steeking. It really was so much worse in my head! The crochet steek & I are BFF's! Easy, quick & clean - that's the steek for me. I'm completely confident in my steeking skills and will cut knitted fabric at the drop of hat. The scissors have been flying in my neck of the woods, so stay back unless you'd like that pullover to become a cardi!

And because this post is all about 'new & improved' may I present one half of my Chilly Morning Mitts ... ta-da!!!
"Colorwork, you don't scare me anymore -and if you know whats good for you, you will behave ... remember I cut knitted fabric with no hesitation. Be warned. "

Susan,
You are as crazy as I am. I laughed so hard the dog thinks I've gone round the bend. She
should talk - she's the silliest dog I have ever known. You are truly a gift! --Judith

Great mitten colors. And congrats on the steeking. I just did my first steek a couple weeks ago and it turned out great so far.

Hah!
Yes, yes!!! practice the steeks - I feel very confident now. It's super simple, but until you've actually done it, it seems terrifying. ;)

I love the colours you chose for the mittens. I had to go download the pattern, and I must say, if I hadn't seen them here in those colours, I wouldn't have looked twice at the pattern. Nice.

Now I just have to go finish my sweater for the third time so I can try steeking, too. Or maybe I should do what you did and just do it over and over again with little squares. Why didn't I think of that before? :)

Jill: It depends on the fiber. The yarn used for a lot of Fair Isle patterns tends to be rather clingy, so no treatment is necessary. I have a Fair Isle sleeveless cardi in the works that is also supposed to be steeked without sewing or any other treatment. The yarn is almost sticky. I found that out when I had to frog. I decided to wait to finish it until I'm done with the CLC, which is just steeked in the front, rather than front, armholes and neckline. I'm using Shadow for my CLC, which isn't quite as sticky, so I will either crochet or hand stitch the front. The tutorial I saw in a magazine showed crocheting immediately next to the sts to be cut, up one side and down the other. Then the tutorial recommended cutting right between the two rows of crochet. I might try that. I'm glad to know that it worked with 2 sc/3 rows. Thanks. Happy knitting! --Peggy

I was thrilled to see the crochet edge to your steek. I had a cardigan waiting for me to do something to it. Had machine stitched and cut the steek but I needed to do something to make it more secure as there was not much to play around with because I decided to steek it after I got up to the armholes. Therefore - no extra stitches. When I saw your crocheted edges I immediately found a hook and crocheted up each side. Voila, neat edges. I am now part way through knitting the front band. Thank you, thank you. By the way, it looks as though you crocheted into every stitch. I did 2 and skip one. It looks okay but I'll only know for sure when the band is all done. This is not my first steeked cardigan but the first one (Fair Isle) was left unfinished along the edges as per instructions from Philosopher's Wool. It has worn very well. I practically live in it all winter.
