I just dyed some Knit picks sock yarn with my left over Easter egg dye. How fun!!!! I got carried away with the number of colors. I was just going to use four colors, but they looked so pretty......... Wet the yarn first in lukewarm water. I put newspaper then plastic wrap down on my kitchen floor. I put a hank of yarn which I had lengthen over the wrap, then painted the dye on the hank with a paint bush- making sure I colored all the strands. Don't let the dye pool. Use just enough to saturate the yarn and get the color you want. Then I wrapped it in the underlying plastic wrap and put it in a casserole dish and microwaved it. I wanted to set the dye but didn't know how long. When you steam it you do it for about 20 minutes, so I wanted to keep it hot for about that long but not over cook or felt it. I started with 1 minute then about every 3 minutes or so I hit it again with 30 sec burst. I was cleaning the kitchen at the time and didn't pay too much attention. I just wanted to keep it hot. After cooling to room temp, it held the dye when rinsed- good enough for me. It turned out so bright and lively! What a great pair of sock for a 7 year old daughter!!!!
I have some great pictures I have to figure out how to post.
