I just started knitting squares for the mitered squares blanket this week. Unfortunately, I'm not using knit picks yarn! My mom had to get rid of just about all of her yarn stash because she has become allergic to pretty much anything but cotton yarn. So, that included some Lion Brand Wool-ease, which is a 20% wool 80% acrylic yarn. I've gotten to be pickier about my knitting yarn since I discovered that yarn was made out of more than just acrylic! I usually don't use acrylic much anymore, but this blend isn't too bad. The wool gives it a good deal more softness than just 100% acrylic has. Anyway, I had several balls and partial balls of this yarn in different colors. When the inspiration struck and I made up my mind to make the mitered squares blanket from Mason-Dixon Knitting I decided that these would work nicely. It IS nice that it is a machine washable yarn, since I've got three little kids. This is not the season in my life to have many things that are NOT machine washable!
I'm toying with the idea of making it a king-sized blanket. It would look great on my bed, but I'm not sure if it would be enjoyable knitting a blanket THAT big. I imagine that time will tell how big it turns out to be. I'll probably have to buy some more yarn though, but that is one of the fun things about this blanket, you don't have to buy ALL the yarn at once!
Who knows, maybe it will wind up a small blanket for one of my kiddos or one of the, count them, FOUR, baby gifts that I'll need this year. I have three cousins and one friend who are all expecting a baby sometime this year! Whew! The babies are coming in waves right now, including my own! (Yes, my oldest was not yet three when my third child was born, so for a few months, I had three under three. Now it's just three under four.) So, I've been knitting lots of baby stuff. I've also been knitting for my kids a lot too. It's fun to whip out a hat, mittens or socks and see their eyes light up when they realize that the thing you have been knitting is for THEM! My daughter is just thrilled when I give her something that I knit! Perhaps it's good to get them started early with an appreciation for hand knits!
