I have been knitting socks for Christmas gifts since about February. I have alot of them to knit and have found that they are such great takealong projects and don't make me too warm knitting in the summer months because they are small.

I start thinking about holiday gift making in July. Then, after my bday and my youngest's bday (just 2 days later) I get serious about what kind of things to do. Usually, since I knit slowly, due in part to time available, I end up doing smaller things. I have done slippers, fingerless mitts, socks, dishcloths, scarves and mittens so far. I am now trying my hand at thrummed mittens for the cold winters we have in MN.

I think that if I wished to make something large, I would have to plan a year in advance -at least. But then, I have not really made anything large yet. (I do have a shawl on needles though... I am likeing it very much.) However, I seem to have a thing for sock yarn and cannot get enough at the moment.
The sad thing is that at the rate I knit a pair of socks, I really should not get any more yarn until I am down to half a dozen sock yarns left. ^_^ (That could take a while. ^_^)

I start knitting for Christmas in the spring to allow enough time to get the bigger items finished in time and then continue on with smaller items.

I like to plan my Christmas knitting in the spring. Then I start collecting the patterns, yarn, and needles. I put these all into cotton bags and I am ready to go. So when I finish one project I have another ready to just pick up and take with me.

I start planning in spring and beging knitting and spinning over the summer. I'm also venturing into soapmaking and dyeing so we'll be having a very handmade Christmas this year!
