Knitting Community

We just launched our new kettle dyed yarn! We chose two popular lines of yarn, Essential (fingering weight) and Wool of the Andes (worsted weight), and then picked out 12 different colorways.

The kettle dyeing process creates yarn with subtle color changes. When you knit it up, your fabric looks rich and nuanced, almost like the way watercolor paints look on canvas. I tend to go for more earth tones - greens and browns and dark reds - and these are right up my alley. I'm thinking of making a pullover, or maybe a felted bag, using the Wool of the Andes Kettle Dye in the Timber colorway.

I should add that I bought my kettle dyed right when it first came out sometime over the summer I guess -- I have not ordered any more recently to compare.

Well, from the 2 comments added to this thread about the new line of Knit Picks Kettle Dyed Wool ... I would say that the quality control problem continues. I held off ordering more of this yarn when Knit Picks re-supplied because I didn't want to order more and be disappointed again. Too bad.

I am still a huge fan of Knit Picks - even though I have been disappointed in this new line of yarn. In the future, I will make kettle dyed purchases only when I can see and hold the yarn in advance of the sale. Too bad Knit Picks doesn't come to Stitches East!!!

I ordered 3 different colors of Kettle Dyed Wool of the Andes: Gold, Timber, and Soot. Like Elaine, I saw no variation in the Timber, which was a little disappointing. Gold was nicely variegated. Soot also had noticeable color changes (clearly a gray and black yarn). I only ordered a couple skeins of the Gold and Timber, just to check them out, but I ordered enough of the Soot to make a sweater and Knit Picks' Convertible Men's gloves.

The first two colors of the Kettle Eyed Essential I received, gold and wine have fantastic subtle changes in the color. Then I ordered more of the gold, spruce and eggplant. The gold and spruce are all one solid color with none of the beautiful variation. The three skeins of eggplant are all three totally different. One of them does have the color changes, but the other two are both solid and don't match.
I am also hopeful that Knit Picks will improve the quality control of this yarn.

I received 3 different colors of Essential Kettle Dye yarns: Gold, Timber and Auburn. Gold was beautifully subtle - but clearly varigated. Auburn was so subtle that it would be hard to see that this yarn is different from a similar brown. Timber was a flat brown... no subtle colorways in any light. From the comments I have read in Ravelry and another order that my sister received, it appears that the problem of no subtle changes is being seen by many customers. I hope that Knit Picks will take the feedback on this new line and make some improvements in the quality control for future shipments. Thanks.
