What’s On My Needles

My sister and I had a wonderful time in Victoria B.C. I started a pair of socks on one long circular needle in the Magic Loop style and fell in love with this new method! I made good progress on my Pi Shawl but ended up finishing it last Tuesday. I am ready to get started on September’s leggings in The Knitter’s Almanac. Bob is heading off for a 10-day business trip so I will have two full-time knitting weekends.

To keep up with my knitting progress during the week, be sure to check out my blog.

Hi Jodi,

Oh, the good old days of my Magic Loop experience. Believe me, I've not done that in a very long time! :) I believe instructions for Magic Loop have improved since then so I definitely use the method you listed out. Much better!

Kelly, I have been listening to the podcasts again... don't know if I heard the comments you made about 2 socks on one needle before, but the fact that you are being told that you have to knit a bit of one sock, put it on a holder to start the second sock then put the first back on the needle to complete the two socks absolutely horrified me when I heard it this time. Several years ago, when I learned ML there was a yahoo group that I joined right after they started... the group is now gone - migrated to a different group under a different moderator - but this is a short bit of instruction that I wrote up for that group soon after I learned to cast on the 2 socks on the one loop... You have probably already figured this one out, but it never hurts to have lots of knitting tips lying around for when you need them. (hope this works, I'm going to copy it into the blog from my saved file) - Jodi/NC

The correct way to do it is to: (the pictures are on our web site, I just copied them off )
1. cast on half of the first sock,
2. cast on ALL of the second sock putting a marker when you have cast on the first half of the sock

3. using the marker, pull out your loop so that you have half of both socks on one needle, and half of the second sock on the second needle. This also puts the first sock at the beginning of the second needle, so it is again the first sock.

4. cast on the second half of the first sock on the same needle you have been using.

5. This will put your socks in the home position ready to begin knitting

Not sure if the pictures are going to show up in this or not... guess I will just have to wait and see...
