Knitting Community

I was looking through the pictures hoping for some inspiration for a new project when I saw a great picture of hkymum64 knitting while camping. It made me laugh and think of all the places that I've taken my knitting. I too have knitted while camping, although it is very hard to get the smoke smell out of your project. I knit all summer while sailing although again to the detriment of my project as the salt spray makes things rather sticky. I would love to hear where you knit and how it affects your work.

Let's see I knit at work during my lunch break, while we are driving to Hilton Head in the summer, at the pool, while falling asleep at night, in the "pick -up " line at school....I could go on and on. I always have my knitting with me.

Better to ask where I do NOT knit....We travel a lot. I dislike driving the motorhome so while my husband does the driving I knit while riding. Usually sox or an easy pattern, so i can put my work aside in a "flash" to look up directions or whatever comes up. I too knit at our campsites, and the campfires. I find that storing the knitting in a bag or tote with a box of Arm and Hammer Baking Soda (the ones you put in the fridge) helps to diffuse the smokey oder. At the beach i only knit with yarns that are smooth and can be machine washed such as Sea Island Cotton. I also have in my tote, besides a Tide Pen, a small travel container of handsoap (no water needed), wet wipes and a small container of Shower to Shower bath powder. This usually takes care of some of the things that can go wrong while being outdoors. The powder is great when my hands get a bit sweaty.
As most of us do I knit while watching TV or listening to music.
In short, I knit , or do other "hand" projects as our grandkids call it, to relax.

I travel alot, so I take my knitting everywhere I go. This weekend I was up in Nashville, Ind., & yes I had my knitting with me. I had the opportunity to go to Sheep Street. It was great. They had wool everywhere! Also roving, spinning wheels, spindles, you name it they had it. It was a sheep farm.I purchased some sock yarn & some camel wool from Chili that was hand spun on spindles. The women that spin s the wool live in a hut & dirt floor. They follow the camels & pick up the wool that they shed. Also they pick the wool off the camels. We really have it good here!

A special place where I always bring my knitting is my husband's lakeside cottage in New Hampshire. We try to spend some weekends there in the summer months. The atmosphere is so peaceful, sitting on the dock with the view of the lake and mountain before me, that it is only fitting that I should be knitting--to complete the relaxation! I will only knit socks in this location, however. I never know if I will get splashed with lake water as my daughter enjoys her swim, or if some sand will get on me as one of the dogs hops up putting his or her sandy paws on my leg....Since I know the sock will eventually end up spending most of its life inside my shoe, I don't really fear for sand or water getting on it. I always associate sock knitting with this lakeside spot!

While watching TV, and if I could knit and read at the same time, I would. I take it any time I travel, by car, plane, etc. The Dr.'s office, at work when it's slow, in the car when in traffic....

Oh, let's see, where do I knit? At home in front of the TV, of course. In front of the computer if I'm working on copying all my CDs into i-Tunes. On car trips, in airplanes, in waiting rooms and hotel rooms. At my various textile group meetings. At Barnes and Noble, when jeanniemarie is off duty, and when the Yarn Harlot makes her appearance next week. The only way it affects my work is that I always have a take-along project, like a sock or a lace shawl.
