I’ve been travelling a lot lately, and I’ve found that I MUST have a lace project for every trip. Lace is so compact (easily fits in my carry on bag) and the complexity of the pattern (the degree of which I can choose in advance, knowing what kind of trip it will be…) keeps me interested for hours. I get an even more desperate feeling about not having lace on the needles than I do when I don’t have socks on the needles; it’s amazing how addicting lace knitting is. I’m currently knitting a lace scarf for my sister for her birthday. It went with me to Stitches Midwest where it was my entertainment during both flights and in the evenings while I was relaxing from the busyness of the show.

I’m knitting this scarf in Shadow, which is a wonderful, heathered, 100% Merino wool lace yarn. I really love the stretchiness of the yarn provided by the Merino. Knitting with some lace yarns will make my hands sore after a while, but I haven’t had this problem with Shadow at all, even after hours and hours of constant knitting. The elasticity of the Merino also makes it easier to achieve the more intricate lace stitches, k3tog and the like, because the yarn will stretch where and when you need it to and then ease back into place for a perfect pattern. I also love the subtle richness of heathered yarns. I feel confident my sister will be able to use this scarf to complement many different outfits because the heather is a blend of several colors she wears regularly. Her scarf will be that colorful spark that perks up an outfit for a damp, foggy day in the Bay area.

What scarf pattern are you knitting? Do you have a favorite for a lace project?

Thanks for the review! I was struggling with a shawl pattern and needed help. After reading your review I tried the Shadow from my sampler pack. It works like a charm! I like the yarn better than the one I chose and I like the look of the fabric. Thanks again for your review.
