Knitting Community

There have been a number of little knitting mysteries that I worked my way through, but it would have been so nice if someone had warned me ahead of time! I'll explain a few of my favorites, such as k2tog vs ssk and how to go about knitting up stitches.

What’s On My Needles

Right after getting back from my trip to Ireland, Tina and I went to Stitches Midwest and had a great time. I had lots of time to work on my Stonington Shawl and I'm so close to finishing my Aran cardigan!

To keep up with my knitting progress during the week, be sure to check out my personal blog.

Oh, yea, it was one of the fingerless glove patterns on your free patterns page.

I had one pattern that called for knitting into the front of the strand. Each method causes the stitch to lay differently. I guess it makes a difference. It's called M1L and M1R. I forget which pattern it was in.

When I pick up yarn between stitches, I knit into the back of the strand and then go on.

I haven't had a chance to download or listen to the podcast, but by knitting socks early on, I learned the difference between and the beauty thereof of the k2tog vs ssk. Recently I've changed the method of the ssk (hopefully to save time, as I'm not a fast knitter - can't quite grasp the Continental method) to more of a k2tog throught the back. I think it works the same, and looks the same. I've encountered a few patterns that call for a k2tog, when a ssk looks a lot better, so when that happens, I just change it.

Love your comments re SSK! but one question on increasing by picking up the yarn between stitches - in some patterns it says to just pick up the yarn and then continue knitting, in others it says to pick up the yarn and knit into it, and then continue knitting. Is it incorrect to just pick up and NOT knit into the picked up yarn?
