My adventures with a speed knitter...

So as I mentioned in my last post, Miriam and her son Thuur are visiting our offices this week from Holland.

We kept Miriam pretty busy yesterday filming video tutorials and posing for a catalog photo, so we decided to do something a little more low key today and film Miriam and Thuur out and about in Portland. First we headed to Multnomah Falls.

Thuur got some amazing shots of a hummingbird. I'll have to see if I can borrow a couple and post them for you.

Then we snagged lunch in downtown Portland at Veganopolis. Thuur's vegetarian and I'm vegan, so Veganopolis was a perfect choice. It was delicious! We'd planned on doing more sightseeing downtown, but today was unseasonably rainy so we decided to wait until later in the week.

Those of you in the Portland area will get a chance to meet Miriam tomorrow and ask her your burning questions about speed knitting, the Guinness Book of World Records, her gorgeous lace scarves and shawls, and Holland at our meet and greet at the North Portland Library from 5:30-7:30, but we wanted the rest of you who aren't local to get a chance to ask Miriam a few questions too.

Miriam will be recording a podcast interview with Kelley while she is in town. What questions would you like to ask her?

Hi Blue Lake Knitter,
I'm like you, I'm a thrower. Miriam taught me how to switch to continental at our group lesson today. Keep an eye out for some of that video footage when we release our new videos, it might help. Good luck!

LaurenM, I asked Miriam about stretching and body mechanics in regards to her knitting (speed and otherwise) and she showed us some simple stretches for shoulders/pectorals that would probably work for any-body, not just one that had been knitting for extended periods of time. (like linking your fingers behind your back and stretching your arms out behind you so that your shoulders roll back and your chest sort of rises up).

When I asked her about forearm/wrist specific exercises she observed that she doesn't really do anything special to stretch these areas - mostly because she is a yoga instructor and already stretches/works them in her yoga practice.

Hope this helps!

I'd like to know if Miriam takes any precautions to ensure she doesn't get a repetitive strain injury with all that knitting. If so, what are they?

I'm assuming with your knitting speed that you knit continental style. I have only been knitting about two years, and pretty much taught myself. I would love to increase my speed, and feel that changing styles would aid in that process. How can I change with ease? I'm doing well with my current methodology, but I'm not as fast as I need to be.

Do you have any tips on how to increase your speed in knitting.
