Handmade socks vs store bought

I rarely wear socks, especially in the summer here in Mississippi, because the heat and humidity sucks and I've liked running around barefoot ever since I can remember (and that's a long time).

However, recently-since I started trying my hand at knitting my own socks, I like them better than store bought for one simple reason-that annoying seam where they sew the toe to the instep, it aggravates my toes like nothing I know. Other than that, I have nothing else against store bought,… Continue

Accidental Yarn-Overs

When you're knitting two items at the same time on two circular needles (gloves, socks, fingerless mitts, etc) You will notice sometimes that you have an accidental yarn-over at the end of one of your items-usually the second one as you're about to turn your needles. This happens if you pull your yarn up behind the cable on the back needle when you start knitting and don't realize it until you get to it.

To avoid this-make sure you pick up your yarn from between the needles when… Continue

Almost done

I'm up to the first toe shaping on my mom's socks and I'm doing it the same as the heel-short row. Yes, I know that means I'll have all 64 stitches to graft off, but kitchener really isn't that bad-in fact it's downright fun once you get going. I know I'm going to have to look it up again before I start because I can never remember exactly how to get it started, but once started, it just goes along like clockwork and once you're done, the graft is at the same spot most commercial sock toes are… Continue

Heel

The sock I'm doing for mom has the heel flap/gusset, and I'm not a big fan of those, so I'm probably going to change it to a short row heel. I was just reading on one of the staff blogs who showed a sock she was working on that had a garter stitch short row heel and it looked pretty interesting. I don't have that book so I don't think I'll attempt to do that type, not without instructions. She apparently did the wrapped, stockinette type before and still always ended up with little holes up the… Continue

Didn't get much done yesterday

At least not on the socks I started. I woke up with a sour stomach, and by afternoon I had watery diarrhea. I took two pills, then a little while later had to take one more since that's what the instructions said-two with the first one and one with any subsequent. Anyway, that took care of that problem, but I still had the sour stomach for the rest of the day, and went to bed with it. Needless to say, I didn't feel like knitting and I barely felt like babysitting my granddaughter. I didn't even… Continue

New here

I'm new to this community and to KnitPicks itself, although I've heard of it and browsed the site many times. I finally ordered some yarn and needles when my mother asked me to knit her a pair of socks and our LYS had already shut down and I had no other choice but to order yarn from somewhere. I decided on KnitPicks mainly for the reasonable prices on their sock yarn, but when my order came in and I felt it, I knew I'd probably order more of it. I ordered two balls of Glacial and two balls of… Continue
