I’ve been travelling a lot lately, and I’ve found that I MUST have a lace project for every trip. Lace is so compact (easily fits in my carry on bag) and the complexity of the pattern (the degree of which I can choose in advance, knowing what kind of trip it will be…) keeps me interested for hours. I get an even more desperate feeling about not having lace on the needles than I do when I don’t have socks on the needles; it’s amazing how addicting lace knitting is. I’m currently knitting a lace s…

The Knitter’s Book of Finishing Techniques
My little brother got me this book for Christmas a couple years ago, and it’s hands-down the one book in my knitting library that I reference the most. Whenever I have to graft a shoulder seam or create a stretchy bind off, I consult Nancie’s invaluable instructions. The book includes clear photos and illustrations, and I especially love that Nancie di…

As a fellow roller derby girl, I’ve got to admit, I was excited about Toni Carr AKA Joan of Dark’s book,
Knockdown Knits before I ever even got a copy in my hot little hands. But now that we’ve got it in stock and I’ve seen it in person, I’m head over heels for this new knitting title. The patterns are clear and easy to follow, there are tons of color photos of each project, and the projects are accompanied by photos of r…

I love these
Soft Ring Stitch Markers! They are the best I have found. I probably have 50 scattered in various nooks and crannies around my house and in the bottom of bags. (And because of their bright colors, I can easily find spot them when they’re hidden in these nooks and crannies.)
They’re great for many reasons, but what I like best is that they’re stretchy and versatile. If they are a l…

I was absolutely thrilled with my plans for our trip to Ireland. It felt like I had chosen my projects and tools well with the exception of the
Stikki Clips. These are relatively new so I don’t think about them when I’m planning a trip. With all of the driving we did in Ireland, these clips would have been very helpful. I found myself balancing my cable chart on the armrest between Bob and I. That didn’t work very well on…

Between stranded colorwork projects with
Palette, socks, and sweaters with sport weight yarn, I tend to do a lot of fine gauge knitting. I also tend to be a slightly loose knitter, so I often find myself using the smallest recommended needle size for a particular weight of yarn (or smaller) to get a fabric that I like. For some reason, my hands are just the happiest knitting with skinny yarn and skinny needles.
As a resul…

Here at the office, I often have to block or re-block projects for photography. We also don’t have a lot of space – so when I have three sweaters laid out on the floor, it can get a bit precarious! But then, as if by magic, two
Space Boards arrived in my cube one day. I naturally thought, “Oh, lay it out on the floor and block something on it.” Well, that doesn’t save space now does it? But then the real magic of the Space Bo…

Have you seen all the new colors in our
Palette line? I’ve known these colors were coming, so I’ve been holding off on starting my first real Fair Isle project until they were in stock – and now they are! The new heathers especially are so lovely; I enjoy examining each one closely to see the individual colors that were blended together to create the subtle richness of the heather color. I really want to do the Autumn Rose…

I’m a fairly new knitter still, just hats and scarves so far, so I’m still learning a lot. My latest learning is the difference between self-striping yarn and variegated or hand painted yarn. I’m knitting a scarf out of
Felici and guess what…it's self striping. I’ve had everyone from my Dad to the receptionist at the dermatologist ask me “how does it do that?”
Felici, of course, is a sock yarn, but I’m n…

Here is the perfect tool to take along with you while traveling.
The Knitting Yarn Cutter is a piece of jewelry with a purpose! I’m heading overseas soon and it's a long trip without my knitting! Today with the strict guidelines for carry on luggage at the airport, I don’t want to take a chance with scissors (thank goodness the knitting needles are now allowed). Well, the Knitting Yarn Cutter will solve that cutting pr…

I think it’s entirely possible I would be doomed to knit scarves and other flat projects for all of eternity if I hadn’t discovered these needles. I struggled with
DPNs when I first attempted knitting in the round and was on the verge of giving up on my legwarmers altogether and just knitting another scarf when I discovered the

Okay, this is another post in my series entitled "Alison Only Blocks Correctly Because She Likes to Inhale
Kookaburra Wool Wash Fumes."
Unlike Kelley, I tend to knit most of my sweaters flat and then assemble them. The
Chibi needles are really great for seaming, mostly because they help you avoid splitting the y…

The
Sweater Stone is a great tool for both hand-made and store bought sweaters. I have to admit that I really hate dry cleaning my wool sweaters as much as I should and therefore my sweaters get very pilly. When we first started carrying the sweater stone we tested it on one of Kelley's favorite Fair Isle sweater made out of
Merino Style and it r…

Since we just launched the brand new colors of
Palette, one of my favorite yarns, I’ve been anxious to use it, but I don’t exactly want to make a big stranded sweater in the middle of summer. The solution: colorful mittens & gloves.
Robin Melanson’s
Knitting New Mittens & Gloves has quite a few great colorwork designs…

Many times I want to knit something but not to wear. What better solution than to knit something for your home! This book,
Classic Knits at Home, has 12 timeless designs for you to knit. My bedroom is crying out for the Lace Throw, a traditional Shetland-like lace shawl, that would look wonderful draped over my bed. There's also some wonderful cabled pillows and throw for the family room. This book h…

I must admit that usually seeing something that claims to be possible in 'five easy steps' gets an eyeroll from me. So to say I was pleasantly surprised by this book,
Design Your Own Knits, would be an understatement!
More than just a stitch dictionary, mix-and-match guide or an inspirational jumping-off point, Debbie Abrahms steps you through the entire creative process necessary to create y…
