HOLA!
OM$%^&%&)__(*^^%%_(^$%$@#$@#&$&G!!!!!!!! I am writing to you and it is seriously it’s 2:22AM 2 (too) AGAIN... it will post later as I am still writing to you...
I can’t believe that you were up so late…Well, I can understand why, but you need to keep your energy up!
That’s interesting about how you knit and it does make sense, why not do it twice in a row while you still have the st pattern in your mind and then move on. No sense in doing it twice and at two different times. I have AADS too! I had about five projects in the works so to speak and now I have two. And after this weekend, I’ll have only one! YAY… they are all in the final stages. The latest throw that I am working on all that is left is the crochet bind off. Should take me a few hours to finish, but then the dreaded wet block.
No, I have never done a moebius cast on. I wanted to try and do a moebius scarf, is it the same sort of thing? I’ll have to check out the books you told me about. The only other crazy cast on I did was a tubular cast on. That’s really interesting. I did a few tams for friends for Christmas and it’s a great cast on. It looks like a 1x1 rib, and it’s SUPER stretchy too.
I don’t have the Denise interchangeable, I have the knit picks version. I swear by them and I have all the different size cables as well. I LOVE THEM and I only knit on circs now. Except that I am a little perturbed at them now. I wrote to them almost a week ago about a broken cable and I haven’t heard an answer back from them. My 60” cable literally broke right at the join to the metal. It snapped off. I think that I told you that I had almost 1000 sts on them and I was on my final round of this pattern!!! Oh believe me, they didn’t want to speak to me as I was trying to save my LACE sts!
I do like knitting scarves but once again I think that the AADS kicks in and I am like, sheesh I am getting bored with it. I am glad that this tote only had 12 repeats or so on the lace, or I would have put it in the need to finish pile, but since I am giving it away as a birthday gift, I had to finish it.
I see you've done scarves... I tried a few before the Holidays and gave them as gifts. I like how mindless they can be!
I have never done a i-cord bind off or even an i-cord for that matter. Looks cool though. Oh cool, I like the city tweed, what does it feel like? And what’s the hand on it. It must be amazingly soft… Have you ever purchased suri or suri dream? I want to know what the hand Is on that. I was going to make a jacket for my Mom and the pattern and the sample I saw was mixed with mohair, I hate mohair, it’s WAAAAAAY to itchy for both my Mom and myself, kid mohair is not so bad, but still has that itch factor. So, wanted to try it out, but was a little hesitant.
It’s great that you try different things. I wish I had the guts to do something like that. Maybe soon I’d love to try and make up a pattern of some sort. And since you did a great job on your tote, I may try and incorporate a few lace sts that I learned and love.
My comments on the tote pattern - they were sincere! in fact I was "gentle" with my written comments! LOL! I was actually thinking something worse! A bag design like this should greet all audiences - experienced or not- with a pleasant experience.... It did not. PERIOD!
I TOTALLY AGREE 100000000000000%
Would love to see you pic of Christmas Buddha! As I said before, a lot of my family are Buddhist and they all celebrate Christmas! But in Japanese tradition, new years day, Jan 1 is the day the Japanese/Buddhist celebrate. More on that date later…
I’ll talk to you soon!
Gino
PS. I guess I can always send you a message rather than doing a post. What would you prefer?
A few posts back you were speaking about my problems with knitting sweaters and I really do like your idea of doing two sleeves, etc. I have never had the desire to knit socks. I don't know why, but it never has intrigued me.
I do love my throws though. I guess that I have found my calling. LOL
And I do like knitting scarves still. The no brainers (garter st) is great. There's a great LYS store in my area and all the ladies are so nice and so helpful there. And talk about great yarn, when I can afford it, I'll buy there, but I normally shop at WEB's... yarn.com.
I'll have to post some of my scarves on here as well. They're fun, but then again scarves can get boring too. LOL and I do really hate purling. I think that is why I LOVE knitting in the round.
As of right now I have about 11 repeats on my lace. How many repeats did you do on your lace to reach 12". I sort of measured my repeats and it looks like 1" or a little more per repeat.
And I think that I would hate sewing the pieces together. YUK! I have a design background and I know how to sew on a machine with my eyes closed, but was never into hand sewing. I always had my Mom do it for me.
It's so funny as you said about this pattern, Cheryl is so sweet she's so positive and I am like bah humbug. Meaning that what the hell was this designer thinking? I mean Cheryl said she's more like an engineer and it's hard to translate for the lay person. Well, the majority of us are lay people and it looks like this was never tested by other people, fact checked/proof read. It's sort of unbelievable to me that they have sold so many of these and the pattern is literally F'd up.
Getting back to your latest post, don't worry, I do that all the time and when I send it out, I look at it and say ummm what was I thinking? I think that I think faster than I type, so I thought that I wrote a word. LOL
Now on to religion, I feel the same way T, I am a very spiritual person as well. Coming from a Japanese background, a lot of my family are Buddhist and I really love some of the things that they talk about. It's so easy to remember and understand. And I believe that Buddism isn't really a religion so to speak but more of a way of life.
Anyway, I digress, I may be writing to you on the next step of this pattern. I figure that I may be done with it by tomorrow, it doesn't seem too hard except for the knitted cast on. Sort of looks like the crochet, but we'll see.
I think that I may try and wetblock my bag, it's a gift and I wanted to the lace to pop a little more than the way it looks now.
Hope the all is well with your Husband and write when you have the time...
Oh, and one last thing T, Your bag turned out GREAT!
When you are finally done, did you wash your bag? Or did you just wet block it. Meaning what did you do to get the lace all nice and stretched out. I mean when I do my throws, I wet block it either in Ivory or Eucalan put it in a towel, roll it up to the excess water out, and then I pin it all out. How do do you that with a bag?
LOLOLOL... Oh well, but you know what I think is that you should do a foundation row before you start the lace.
I have one more four color repeat before I get to the lace and I think that I am going to do a foundation row in whatever color comes after marshmallow.
So, don't worry about it. And I love your reindeer cookies. Cute!
I still owe you a response to your other message and I promise to do that when I have time. Hopefully tonight.
I haven't read all the messages, but I hear your husband is ill? Well, I am not a religious person, but he's in my thoughts Teri.
I know it's hard when you have a loved one that is ill. I've been there, all I can say is be strong and there for him.
Thanks so much for the kudo's on my knitting. I love some of the stuff you've made and some of the sweaters are gorgeous. I have always wanted to knit a sweater, but for me it just gets boring for me. That's why I like the doing lace.
And too funny about replying to me. This message board is so different than all the other ones. I am still trying to figure it all out.
I agree with you in regard to the directions of this and all the different things that you have to do to create such a simple bag. I think that on the order form it should read: REALLY ADVANCED KNITTING and hopefully you'll figure it all out. LOL
I was really excited when I first saw the bag on KP. I wanted to make it for my cousin for her birthday. Luckily it's still two weeks away! And it looked like a fun and easy pattern to make. Then I got the directions, and I was like, is this in a different language that I am not familiar with? I mean understood them, but I believe they could have been written out better and in more detail. Maybe made it a two pager or something.
I didn't realize that you were suppose to purl the first row after the provisional. I ended up just doing a knit row as Cheryl said she did, as when I did it the first time (without the knit row), I just did an experiement and did a few rows and tried to rip it apart. And yes, it was a huge mess!
It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. Ripping the whole thing apart, this is actually the first project that I have ever ripped out the WHOLE thing.
It is sort of theraputic in a sense, but when you have lots of yo's and SK2P's and some cable sts in the lace rounds, it sort of makes you go mad! You can drop so many sts that way, but I have become a pro now of tinking back. (most lace knitters do a lifeline every so many rows, I don't do it, since I am knitting on rather large yarn and needles it's easy to just tink back. If I were using lace weight yarn I would definitly be using lifelines. I just had a rather "wrist slitting" experience a few days ago. My 60" KP cables broke on one end and I was literally on my last round of 129 rounds and 1/3 of my sts came off the cable. I wanted to scream! But managed to get them all back on the needles. I had over 900 sts on my needles. Took me a long time, but did it! Previous to that, I had to tink back 1.5 rounds and that was about 1300-1500 sts. Now that took awhile, a few hours at least. But now it's almost done as I am about 1/3 done with the crochet bind off. I'll post picks once it's done and blocked.
Here's the link to the project that I just completed.
I used eco wool so it's about 10X larger than the doily. LOL I believe it will be about five to six feet across. It's fun and it's a great gift to give. Especially when you give your projects to people that knit or crochet. They know how much time, energy and love that went into it.
Heheheh, I love the sound of breaking glass too, unless I'm in Tiffany's and it's my fault!!!
I will complete this bag, and I won't be doing another one as well. I may hand off the baton to my Mom and have her knit one. I know that she'll be calling me A LOT. As I know she probably won't join the group.
I'd love to see some of your other bags that you have done. It would be nice to knit something that's just a no brainer!
Thanks again and I'll keep you posted as to my progress and I know I'll have some questions!
Teri
Anytime you give something of yourself, you get a whole lot more back.
I'm the same way... when I get something finished, I just cannot wait to gift it. I knit for over a year before I found KP, so it's hard to say how many things went out the door with no pictures at all. Oh, well, I have learned from the past, and will do better in the future.
Teri,
Thanks a lot. There are quite a few things that got away before I was able to take pictures. Now I take pics as soon as I finish... if not after blocking. this way I have a good record of things I have completed. It it s good feeling.
Oh Teri, how life likes to throw us those curve balls. I will be praying for you and your husband. It's crazy how a simple ache or pain can suddenly become so serious. However I am constantly amazed by the power of positive thinking and prayer. If you are in need of anything please let me know. I know I am almost 2500 miles away, however I love to send care packages and bundles of love. I would love to put one together for you and your husband. Whenever you need a mental pick me up, just email me your address and I'll wisk it in the mail.
As far as projects go, you have knit enough for any entire village and it's only April!!! That's awesome! Have you seen the wash cloth pattern in the latest Mason Dixen book? It's a really simple elegance. As all Mason Dixen is. But just fabulous. Currently I'm trying to learn to knit with a thimble on my finger that has a place to hold 4 different strands of yarn. That way I can still knit continential and not stress my hands with the yarn being wrapped around my hand and fingers. But I have really small hands and fingers, and the thimble is one size fits all. So I end up wrapping my finger in tape until I can shove the thimble over it and it won't fall off. It's funny. But atleast I can knit again, and not have to try and knit the american way, which I'm really slow at. I haven't finished a project since last october! It's been really sad. But my hands are getting better, I just have to use size 15 or larger if I want to knit right now. I have these really great handles for my crochet hooks that are nice and fat so I can atleast crochet. I'm working on this gorgeous lace scarf for my sis-in-law. I found this hand painted, super wash wool sock yarn that is a vivbrant petal pink, to sunset orange. It's amazing. And it feels so good to be able to do something dainty instead of always being oversized.
I haven't done any spinning lately either. But I have been looking for the perfect patterns for the yarn I have made. It's just fun to sit and look at it and know that I made it.
I would like to chat with you online sometime. I have goggle chat as well, but I've never used it. I don't have that many people who are far away to chat with :) So we could try the next time we are online together, when ever that happens. Seeing as we both like to run around crazy at times!!!
Take care, and please keep in touch, and let me know what your husband would like in a care package. Ohterwise you never know what silly things I might send!

Yoo Hoo! Surprise! It is I back from, well, errr, I'm not really sure, but let's just say a crazy part of life. My hands decided to stop working for me, I have capral tunnel already, and now I have arthritis as well. Of course that meant that I couldn't knit, crochet, spin, type, pick my nose. It was insane! So I doubled my physical therapy and know I'm slowly getting back there. I had 3 minor surgeries on my neck as well. Oh good times! Then, and this is a ggreat thing that happened, we found out that my husband doesn't have to deploy to Iraq with his Brigade!!! Instead he's staying here and being the rear support man. So he's still really busy, but atleast he can come home at night and on the weekends.
Now I'm having to re-learn how to knit. I use to knit continential. But I can't hold the yarn that way anymore with my arthritis. Also I can only use really big needles at this point, like sz 17 and up. But at least I'm knitting and that makes me really thankful. I miss hearing from you, though and I've been wondering what you've been up too as well. So when you get a moment, drop me a line and let me know. Enjoy your fiber!
Jen
My mom taught me to knit basic slippers at age 4 - and I have to say that knitting has been one of the best gifts that anyone has ever given me. Throughout the years I've found that knitting is not only good for creating gifts for others, it is also "cheap therapy".... I mean... some people calm their nerves by paying for spas - and the like - but I find that knitting, playing the piano, reading or listening to a good book, (and of course an occasional nice glass of wine) can be much more soothing to the soul than so many other remedies!
I have an unusual background involving such things as dance, music, teaching skiing -and working in a circus - Oh yes - and let's not forget the meter-maid job in Lodi, California! I've also worked as a radiological technologist and then a reading specialist and learning assistant for children with special needs. Although I'm over 50 now, I feel like I may 'never grow up'!
I'm a mom of three "grown", and "almost grown" kids! And if any of you you younger moms think it's hard raising small children... just wait until they are grown! - I've found that I worry just as much, if not more, about each them as they grow older!
I grew up in Washington State - then moved to Northern California - back up to Portland, Oregon and then we were transferred here to Texas about 4 years ago. This has been a major adjustment - ( moving to Texas) - I wonder if I will ever fit in! (Okay - I've had to retract a previous statement regarding knit shops in this area - I went to the local library last night as I had heard there was a knitting group there.... I met the nicest ladies and they have clued me in on a couple of local knit shops ... I had not known of such shops and that is what caused me to stumble upon KnitPicks! I'm still very happy to have found KnitPicks!!!)
I hope you will find time to leave a note and share any other great sites that might be fun to look into.
Thanks for stopping by!
