Knit for the Troops!

Posted on February 2, 2009 at 5:41pm 5 Comments

My friend's husband, Dana, is being deployed to Iraq on 2/16. I made him this hat for his birthday, and he made sure that he had it with him before he left for Jersey, where they are being trained before they leave. This made me think, I wonder if i could convince my ladies to knit a few that we could send off to his unit. I have attached a picture and the pattern, so if anyone is interested let me know! It is a simple pattern with Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick on size 15… Continue

One down... wow! After I sent the first message this evening, I cast on the first hat, and with a few interruptions, I kept knitting, and I just finished the first hat. If the yarn holds out, there should be three done by tomorrow afternoon. I'll send pics when they are all finished.

By the way, love the fingerless gloves. They look very nice and warm.

Thanks, I started one right after I sent that message, and I'm almost 1/2 done already, so I will knit as many as the two balls I bought will allow - that is all they had in a neutral color - Fisherman. But it is looking real nice. I'll keep you posted on my progress. I've put all of my other projects on hold for this weekend for this purpose. I feel strongly that we need to let our troops know that we care about them and appreciate the work they are doing for us. Maybe these hats will tell that story better than we can.

Saramags: Sorry to be so long in getting back with you. I've been snowed in twice, and finally got to the yarn store today. I've got several WIPs in progress, but plan to start this evening and see how many hats I can get finished this weekend. I will get out Monday and send them in the mail. I knit several similar hats with sport weight yarn on size 8 needles for Christmas and I finished each one in about a day and a half. I should be able to get two or three this weekend, if that is OK. Let me know where to mail them, and I'll send them out first thing Monday morning. Hope this will be OK.

Due to some inclement weather I didn't get to the yarn store yesterday, but by the weekend I should have the yarn and will immediately start knitting. I will keep you posted on my progress.

Thanks for allowing others to help.

I checked and there is a store in a nearby town with this on sale
@ 2 skeins for $9. I can pick some up tomorrow, and can probably do at least 2-3 hats. I only have one knitting friend here locally who might be interested. Is there a specific color we should make, or does it matter... I'm thinking maybe it does. How many do you need for the whole unit - I'll talk with my friend tomorrow and see if she or anyone she knows is interested. I think this is a wonderful idea.

Thanks Sarah...but you really have done as much or more in challenging projects. The only scary thing about a sweater is hoping it fits when you are done. Gotta get that gauge right...or not! You could always gift it to a friend who is a size smaller or larger than yourself! Start with a top down circular like the one your Mom and I made. At least you don't have to sew it together! When you are done knitting, you are done.
I kinda forgot about this site until I got your email. I have pictures...gotta remember how to get them out there..maybe next week.
