I just re-read the nice comment you left for me all the way back in December; sorry I didn't reply sooner.

Our offices are located in Vancouver, WA, so all the Knit Picks staff is in the Portland/Vancouver area. I moved here from Michigan 3 years ago, and I have to say I was glad to see the snow these last few weeks. My husband and I really missed it!

I don't spin, but I think I can understand your reluctance to knit/part with your handspun. It can be hard to give away things that are so close to us. If you have a special recipient in mind, though, it may make it easier.

I'm about to start a sweater for my son, out of Comfy. He's so big already-- almost 11 months! Are you working on anything? Take care!

My "military" sevice was actually 20+ years working for the US Army Corps of Engineers as a civilian. My other 12+ years was with the Veterans Administration.

But it adds up to my 32+ for retirement, and that is all that counts.

Thanks again.

Regarding the socks I've knit: I knit several pair using dpns (didn't know you could do anything else) over about a 4-6 month period. It was at that time that I started hearing about Magic Loop, and purchased the booklet through Knitpicks. Now I do all of my circular knitting in the fashion. It sure is easier for me. I can knock out a pair of socks in no time - same with mittens. I only started doing them a month of so ago. I found a really simple pattern that you can tone up or down at a whim.

The picture of my retirement shows Col. Dana Hurst, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (our commander) giving me on of 3 awards presented. The other pictures of other awards just didn't come out very good.

Regarding "snow day"... who would have thought that there would be a need for soccer gear (shin guards) to be adequately equipped for snow play???

Oh yes! The snow.... I talked with our middle son a couple of hours ago. His apt. complex is at the top of a steep hill. He parked his car next to the building and as the snow drifted the entire front half of his car became buried . He actually snow boarded down to the grocery store with a friend and evidently there is someone in a four wheel drive that has been towing sledders, tubers, and snowboarders back up to the apts. Lol!
Ouch! the layer of ice on top of all that snow is absolutely no fun at all. Those sugar cookies sounded like a good substitute for snow play! Yum!
My sister just e-mailed me and said that she was in a fender bender last night up in our home town of Wenatchee, Washington (where they are accustomed to getting tons of snow) It was just one of those things where another car was sliding and she tried to get out of the way but CRUNCH! No injuries... on of those slow motion things.
Yup. Dundee wine is pretty good all right! Our oldest son has worked a season or two for a winery in that area.

OH... and I almost forgot to tell you -
My husband had given a co-worker a bottle of Duck Pond wine for Christmas as he wanted this fellow to try something from Oregon... soooo this same guy wanted to reciprocate so he ordered two bottles of wine to give to my husband. Guess where they were from? Yup! Dundee, Oregon! From the Evolution winery!

oh my gosh! I loved reading your last post! I've been there before.... and then again, there are times like today... I was riding along in the car, looking at a book that had just a picture (no instructions) of a wonderful Nordic sweater ( you know the kind... with the nifty little silver buttons down the front and the intricate pattern done in three colors) ANYWAY.... it hit me.... I realized I had finally finished all my Christmas projects.... even that wonderful pair of socks that I fully expected to keep for myself but instead added extra length to the foot and wrapped them up to give to my mom for Christmas....*deep breath*...and I felt LOST while idling away precious time WITHOUT having a knitting project in hand. It seems that lately I can't get enough knitting..... I mean... it's starting to take over many aspects of my life. All I want to do is buy more yarn, knit more projects, buy more patterns, make up more patterns of my own, and knit, knit, knit! I even get cranky at times when someone wants me to do something for them in the evenings because all I want to do is sit and knit! And then, TODAY!..... my little drop spindle and soft alpaca wool came in the mail.... The instructions warn the user that it too can become so therapeutic and relaxing that they may not be able to stop. Therefore, I'm a bit nervous about starting! LOL!

Yup - When we moved here to Texas 4 years ago we had a huge garage sale and we sold tons of sledding gear. Some of the best ones we had bought at costco, but we did have a regular radio-flyer sled as well and some of those lightweight saucers etc. I think that those inflatable tubes for behind boats work well too... did you try GI Joes? or Freddies? They used to carry them but maybe everyone just sold out.

LOL! That's awesome! I really miss having a 'real' winter-wonderland.... I remember having so much fun during the winter months... I practically grew up on skiis - and have fond memories of riding on a flying saucer ( they were made out of metal back then) that was attached to a ski rope behind a snowmobile. that was so much fun! Or even in our old neighborhood in Tigard ( on Genesis Loop) parents and kids alike would take over our street in the winter time and had a blast sledding down the loop. Our puppy hasn't experienced snow yet... She sure seems to like this cooler weather though!

Hi Jen! I see you met one of my (Washington) friends! I went to school in Pullman.... "go wassu!"
Yes, I think i got quite a bargain with that eBay drop spindle... can't wait for it to get here!
I've been hearing from my sons that things are pretty cold and slippery there in the Willamette valley. One son actually had to have a tow truck get his car down the hill from his apt. so he could drive up to Portland to work. He had to park his car at the bottom of the hill tonight and walk up to his apt. even treacherous to be on foot it seems. I guess you are in store for some nasty weather tonight and tomorrow as well. Hang in there!
It's been in the teens and twenties here in Texas. Everything was covered in ice today.... Our "puppy" (one year old all white Alaskan Malamute) looks like Bambi on a frozen pond every time we let her out to go potty! I'm so worried she's going to slide right into the pool!

About Me:
I'm a Mom, an Army wife, I started knitting when I was 7, then re-learned in my twenties. That's when I discovered yarn shops and all the amazing yarn that they hold. Not these acrylic 99cent versions of plastic nightmares that chain stores sell as yarn. That's when I really began to love to knit. Then the same glorous friend who introduced me to the shops taught me to crochet. Now I love combining both to create truly one of a kind Jen originals. Now I'm trying my hand a spinning. I started with a drop spindle and a 5 minute lesson at a local Sunday market. After a month I was fortunate enough to have a cousin who felt I must try an actual spinning wheel, and she has loaned me hers for the interm. well nothing describs the feeling you get when you are working with some of the softest, most beautifully dyed fibers in the world, and they are moving through your hands at a steady rhythm onto a bobbin creating yarn. It's an amazing peace, and eletricfing satisfaction all at the same time. It's a blast! It's really hard to put down and want to do anything but spin these creations. But I will get these felted slippers finished for Christmas, I just have too!

Ah the post-Holiday dig out!

Greeting all! I am finally emerging after what seems to be a life time stuck under gift wrap and those darn sticky backed bows! Argh! I'm still finding them is crazy places, just like dog hair. Anyway, I was bummed I didn't get my slippers done in time for Christmas. But such is life. I kinda came to a mental road block with them. Maybe someone out there can help. I'm using a felted pattern, but my father-in-law( who they are for) is going to use them with his SCA garb. So he asked if I could pu… Continue

My yarn finally arrived!!!

Okay,so I shouldn't say finally since it did get here 3 days before it was suppose to even though we had almost 24" of snow on the ground for 10 days. But I just couldn't wait to get this yarn and start my first sweater! And i am so in love with this Emerald green that I can't stop staring at it. Now here comes the hard part. I am 3/4 of the way done with my socks and all I want to do is put them down and start the sweater. Argh it's so hard not too. I even told myself I wouldn't do this, that I… Continue

Did you ever have that feeling?

I always joke with my husband that it takes a total eclispe of the sun before I realise something that is right in front of my face, however I came to a startling discovery yesterday and I just had to laugh at myself. Especially since I know I'm not alone in this category. I have about 5 or 6 different projects on my needles right now and I'm having the hardest time wanting to finsih any one of them. I get about 3/4 of the way through or to the point where all I have to do is sew the pieces toge… Continue

Snowy Day!

So I live in Oregon for the basic fact that it's green and the weather is usually mellow. We get our fair share of rain, and a few sunny days, but if it snows we are lucky to see 1/4" and then to have it stick is Amazing! Well right now as I look out my window we have 10+" of snow, and atleast 1/2" of ice on top of that to make it seem like someone has dumped shlack all over the place. My kids, who are 7 and 5, have spent about 3 hours a day out in the snow since it began to fall last Sunday, dec… Continue
