If you still have the bottom part intact, just use an empty toilet roll core over the spool. If you find that it slips, just use a bit of rubber cut from a latex glove to "stick" it down and keep i...

tell me about it. I finally figured that if you kept the darn yarn between the two seperate sets of needles, that you'd be ok. Note to others: knit this only for somebody you LOVE TO DEATH!!!

A yarn winder is a must. Knitpicks has a new one that is very reasonable. I don't have a swift yet, but I just wrap the hank around my little boy and put him on the spinny stool and we have a ball ...

Going to Georgia for Easter, What an Adventure

What fun we had! We drove down on the 10th ducking and dodging the tornados and nasty storms only to find clouds completely obscuring 129 just south of Blairsville. This is not a big deal you say...Well, this part of the road is more than a little curvy, up high in the mountains. Curvy being defined as 45 minutes or better of switchbacks and hairpin turns with the drop off the mountain a one way trip if you should go offroad. Our visibility was limited literally to about 10 ft ahead of the car w… Continue

Woot! I did it....

So, I called the local(45 miles away) LYS, got directions, and off Lu(DD) and I went in search of a spindle and some fluffy bits. One basic drop spindle, one bag of alpaca(prettiful), one bag of jacob wool(guard hairs explained), and one stringdoll(too cute) later and we were heading home again. The ladies were very helpful and explained the basics. I have researched, viewed every video and site (thanks Peggy!) suggested, and felt ready to finally try this spinning thing out.

OH...My...Gosh!

Thanks so much for your advice. I love hearing from more experienced knitters and other adults - it seems that I get along better with people older than me than I do girls my own age! ^-^ It's great to hear someone say the exact same thing my mom always does - keep asking questions. I guess that means she's probably right!

Have you been to Yarn Craven in Perrysburg? It's very nice - don't know about spinning, tho.

What do you need for spinning? Roving? I'll check at Fiberworks - I know they do spinning with drop spindle and wheel. The other shops I'm aware of don't spin, I don't think - there's Yarn and Needle in Centerville, Woolly Bully in Springboro (both S. of Dayton), Stitching Post in Centerville is a mega-sewing shop that carries some yarn - at least they did when I was there last, Busy Beaver here in Beavercreek (lots of yarn but most other crafts, too), and Yarnique in Fairborn - next to WPAFB - they have all organic yarns.

1/2 way finished with my Hemi. I've been knitting almost continually for over 5 hours, and it's nearly my bed time. I'll finally finish up tomorrow. Be looking for the pics.

Dithpicable: On Knitty Gritty they demonstrated making a drop spindle using an old CD, a dowel, a hook and a washer-like thing that holds the CD on the dowel. You might be able to find the instructions on their website. There are lots of videos on youtube. There's one that shows the park-and-draft method, which slows the process down enough to learn. If you are interested in trying out before investing a lot of time in making a nice one, that could be pretty quick. I didn't do too well until I had a wheel and a friend who could watch what I was doing. --Peggy
