Pretty much the only advice I could give is to knit a swatch - then you would know how many stitches per inch you would have. So if you are getting the correct gauge for the sweater, you'll want to knit the size closest to the size 12 - we use chest measurements because sizing is so different between companies. When I look up a child size 12, it says the chest measurement is 38' - but everyone is different! :)

I recieved your question in regards to the Sweater kit. You should be able to go down a needle size to get the same gauge - however you will want to knit a swatch first to make sure!
