About Me:
Heya, people! My name is Eileen. I'm just starting to learn to knit, and while looking at podcasts, I came across the Knit Picks podcast, so I checked out the site, and you can see where this is going. I already know how to knit using a loom, and I plan to continue to use it for hats and simple things like that, which would take me forever on needles, but only a couple hours on the loom.

I play the flute, participate in Science Olympiad, and read waaaaay too much for my own good. I'll be a freshman this coming August. It's kind of nerve-racking, but I'm sure my knitting will help me through it!

Stupid YOs.

So, everybody has seen the Grandmother's Favorite pattern on ravelry. It's that one that starts off with three stitches and increases to forty-three, then decreases back down to three? Yeah, that one. It's one of the easiest patterns out there, and I still managed to screw it up. I don't exactly know what kind of increases I did, but they sure wern't yarn overs. Check it out:

Garter, garter, and more garter stitch.

Stuck in a rut. And I despise it.

I've made about 6 garter stitch scarves with my awesome size 11 needles I got for confirmation from my knitting buddies. They go so much faster when you have larger needles. Now that I'm addicted to knitting (which happened almost immediatly, but now it's much worse) I'm itching to make something more. That eye pillow was a no-go because library due dates come up surprizingly fast.

So, I get a ravelry account, and...

I CAN'T DECIDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So, a… Continue

Impatience.

Okay, so, there are two things I probably should have learned by now from waiting in the doctor/dentist/whatever office, reading science journals: I have a very, very limited amount of patience, and I am always hungry to learn more. So, as you can probably guess from the last couple sentances, a garter stitch scarf is not exactly my thing right now. As soon as my stitches became neat rows and I could blast through a good amount on my forty minute bus ride to school, I was ready to purl, but that… Continue

Fuzzy Pink Love

Okay, so, I took a break from the needles this week, because over Easter break, I did some traveling. A brand new Ben Franklen had just opened up in Mitchell, so naturally, I had to stop and buy some yarn. I bought some Patons Classic Wool Merino in That's Pink! and immediatly whipped out my loom and got started on a pair of slippers. Now, normally, I'm not all that into pink, but… Continue

Hey, everyone! Happy early Easter! Let me tell you, it feels sooo good to have a full five days off from school. I've managed to sleep in until noon today - I havn't done that since I was ten! And that was only because I was suffering from strep throat at the time....

Well, anyway, Easter has now become my favorite holiday. Why? Well, because as an Easter gift, my confirmation… Continue

Hi Eileen,
Rule #1 : You can never ever read too much! My daughters are 18 and 21, and my son is 8. Lauren (18) is rereading all of the Tamora Pierce books. Her grandma took her to Borders for her birthday and she received one entire series for her gift. I think it is about 12 books in all. I am 44 and I read alot as well. Our library has an online access where you can download books to read for free, just like checking out one normally. My other daughter reads mostly Fantasy and Science fiction to "relax her brain" from college texts. My son loves to read astronomy and science topics. He wants to be a research scientist and develop laser weapons. Well, he is a boy after all. I think he'll make a great scientist. Reading keeps your brain exercised and your thought processes fluid.

I have gone back to school for my Master's Degree in Information Technology and I make myself do my homework and my housework before I can play too. It's all about scheduling time to do what you want as a reward for doing what you must. Rewarding yourself is as important at 14 as it is when you are older.

I love my knitting, weaving, and sewing. It feels so wonderful to just "make" things doesn't it? Make sure and get yourself a blank book or journal to write down your ideas for things to make or do as you read. You just never know what will pop into your head while you are reading or studying. I have found that while taking a break from writing a paper that knitting or crafting will give your brain time to process the information from studying and sink in a bit. When I get back to my coursework, it flows better.

Have a great time in school! It is so much fun learning new things surrounded by all of your friends and favorite teachers. I have always told my kids that their job was to suck all of the information they could out of their teachers brains. If in doubt, ask lots of questions. Shoot, ask questions anyway! Their job is to teach you what they know. Just picture their poor brains at the end of the year, all deflated like a balloon. Ok that is probably too evil of a thought....

Have fun!

I love fantasy! Have you read The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan? It's pretty intense, but I love it. I'm working my way through for the third time in preparation for the final book(s). The last book is coming out in three parts over the next two years. Anyway, I like a wide variety, but those are my favorite. I've read a lot of different types...historical fiction, fantasy, some Christian fiction (mostly Ted Dekker, Frank Peretti, and Francine Rivers)...I liked some of Michael Crichton's stuff, and I've read a lot of Anne McCaffrey's books. I guess for me, it's more whether the story catches my attention than the genre. :)

Hi Eileen....I like your scarf; everyone is going to want one! I'm a big reader too; but since I joined KnitPicks, I haven't had much time to read and don't really miss it right now. Some knitters listen to audio books while they are knitting. Your loom looks like fun, but once you get used to your needles, I'm thinking the loom will be neglected. Now, if you get really good, and fast, you could almost knit your way thru college! But for now, just have fun with it and look forward to seeing you progress on that pretty scarf.
