Rib Warmer nearing completion

I'm making the Rorschach Rib Warmer vest from the pattern in Elizabeth Zimmerman's book, "Knitting Workshop."

I saw a finished vest in a local yarn shop and loved its simple utilitarian look. I bought the book and love it too though so much is beyond my skill level. Still, a challenge is good for nurturing synapses and so long as I don't wear the expensive yarn out ripping out and starting over, I guess I'll learn in some fashion.

This pattern is really pretty simple, but like any of them, you have to watch stitches and gauge. My problem comes when I try to knit at night and start to fall asleep...!

Ms. Zimmerman is passionate about using natural fibers though and I hadn't thought about it too much until reading her thoughts on it. I just thought wool and other "natural" fibers were expensive and hard to care for in every day life.

Treasure Shawl Shimmers in Spice

Yarn is stashed in my filing drawer. My lacework is in an antique basket I've dragged around forever and last used for potpourri. It works perfectly. Markers note each segment of my pattern (thanks again Kelli!) and I've learned to stop when I am tired. Falling asleep between stitches does not work for accurate counts.

Without a ball winder, I hand wound one ball of Shimmer lace (Baby Alpaca and Silk) in Spice (the photo from KnitPicks) and started on a Treasure Shawl as a gift for one of my fr… Continue

Oh but what about this one? Or this one?

My Cranberry Festival version of Kay Meadors' First Shawl is completed except for weaving in a few ends. I washed it and blocked it and took pictures. It is far from perfect...oh so far... but I learned about lace and refreshed my knitting long dormant knitting skills.

Wild Cranberries sparkle in First Shawl plus Ami Buddy In The Pink champions breast cancer awareness

My Cranberry Festival First Shawl designed by Kay Meadors is off the needles

And the pattern surely does work, though I had my doubts at times, even to the delicate scalloped edge. The beads line up and most of the mistakes are not apparent at first look.

It is beautiful. Deep, rich reds in kettle dyed merino wool from sheep in Uruguay. Doesn't that sound exotic? I am surprised how light it is. And warm. Here in Wisconsin temperatures dropped this weekend so much that the furnace… Continue

Lace shawl project is a Festival again!

My lace edge on my Kay Meadors' First Shawl pattern was a cobwebby mess. Despite trying to correct it on each design row, it wasn't working and finally I ripped it out.

I didn't set the life line because the body of the shawl is solid and in the process I re-learned to pick up dropped stitches (though the lacework is not so easy to do). But I took it back to the shawl body, counted up the stitches, straightened the stitches and began again. There are still mistakes but not the mind cripp… Continue

Cranberry....sauce? Adventures in lace knitting

Now several inches into the lace edge of the shawl I'm working on that is near complete, there is no doubt in my mind the designer would not recognize it. Some things I've learned,

1) how to pick up some dropped stitches and fix some mistakes,
2) how to add beads without pre-stringing them

Some things that still baffle me are how to avoid splitting these fine yarns when placing the beads, and how to fix "lace" when the stitches aren't matching up on the end. It isn't a complicate… Continue

Okay. I get this part. Now to find a crochet hook small enough for a size 6 bead. The steel 7 is too big.

Here is a neat way to do it without stringing the beads on the yarn..

It covers about 5 pages, but is extremely helpful.

There is a method where you put the yarn (thread) loop through the bead right before you knit it. I think I heard this on the podcast that Kelley did with Kay Meador several months ago. That way you don't have to thread the bead onto the yarn all at one time.

The KWB is where you place the beads. I'm sure about that part.

OK, have you looked at the largest picture of this shawl on Ravelry... it is located here.

I really think the edging is worked around the sides. I might be mistaken.

If you will notice on the Edging instructions, there are several KWB (the chart says that you work this stitch with a bead.

The instructions are not very clear as to where to work the edging. If you are a Ravelry member, you might try sending Ms. Meador a message. Maybe she will answer. I don't know what else to do.

Bobbie, Here is my interpretaton.

Row 1: K2, YO, K2, SK2P, K2, YO, (KWB, YO, K2, SK2P, K2, YO) across to last 2
sts, K2. The portion in ( ) is the only part that you repeat.

Row 2: K2, purl across to last 2 sts, K2. This should be self explanatory.

Row 3: K2, YO, SSK, YO, SK2P, YO, K2 tog, YO, (KWB, YO, SSK, YO, SK2P, YO,
K2 tog, YO) across to last 2 sts, K2. Again only repeat the portion in ( ).

Row 4: K2, purl across to last 2 sts, K2. Same as Row 2.

Repeat Rows 1-4 for 3”, ending by working Row 4. Repeat as above.

Does this help any, or is the ( ) not the part that confused you?
