Alison, thank you so much for the book. AND for the warning about the yarn ball icons. One of the good things about knitting shawls is that they are forgiving when it comes to gauge. I can swatch, and swatch and still come out different in the finished project. I'm working on the Bigfoot shawl and am more than 1/2 way through the second ball of Shadow lace weight. I wanted it to be a little longer and think it will be perfect with the two balls. I'm looking forward to finishing this and starting a yet to be decided second shawl. The patterns are all so beautiful I probably won't have decided until I actually cast. on.

One note--the yarn ball icons were added late in the process, not by me, and are a tad squirrelly. (I definitely should have caught them in the proofreading phase.) Go by the yardage per weight rather than the icon. In general, I used fingering weight. (The Wanda's Flowers yarn is heavier), and I've had great success in using a heavy laceweight, 875 yards/100g, and still getting a nice-sized shawl out of it.

I have been working on Julia, but as a side project did the zinnia scarf to try out the new Knit Picks comfy yarn. Love the yarn, it is so soft to work with and I am very pleased with how it looks. I did not really think about it until it was too late, but the lace pattern for the zinnia at both ends is stockinette and it is curling like crazy. With the yarn being so soft, I am not sure steam blocking will fix it. Does anyone have any suggestions, such as an edging I can add, that might take some of the curl out? If I were to make the pattern again, I would add a seed stitch border to tame it a bit. Other than the curl, very cute pattern and a pleasure to knit.

I'm really favoring doing Michelle. However, I notice that it is done with #2 size yarn. I'm wanting to use some cotton that I have tons of it, but it is quite fine - about 27 wpi. Could I double it? Or should I switch to my other choice, Tara, that uses a #1 yarn?

I personally tend to go for fingering weight or so for most of my shawls, but the kid mohair Julia, although it looks like the bigger shawl of the two pictured, has a smaller stitch count across and goes well with a larger, worsted-weight (or more) yarn like that. I made one and tried it on a friend whose weight is about double mine; it was quite a bit shorter on her, of course, but it looked lovely, and she tied it in front, even though it was so few stitches across--it worked. I'm throwing these thoughts out there just to make sure you don't get too much bulk in the increasing at the bottom of the yoke--every yarn is different, though, not to mention gauges.

I definitely decided on Julia and I am using Wool of the Andes in Rain for the Yoke and Chambray for the bottom

So very nice to have Alison join in. I had the pleasure of meeting you at Stitches East. Still working on the Bigfoot, several rows into the body. With your suggestion I will try the Julia next.

The very simplest is the Julia pattern. After that, the Michelle, the Water Turtle, and the Bigfoot are quite easy to do for beginners.

Hi, I'm Linda. I read Alison's blog and am a lace knitter wannabe. I've done a little lace and figure that this is a very good place to take the next step. I got my book today and am deciding between Tara's Redwood burl Shawl and Michelle's Shawl. Looking around at different yarns . . .

i recently finished Bigfoot, made in a acrylic for ease of care for the ill person I gifted it too, I am planning on starting Julia next, in some Knit Picks Wool of the andes or some KP sock yarn that I have. I will decide on that tomorrow. Glad I found you through ALison's site!
