Bonnie, I picked the same pattern, needles & alpaca cloud yarn for my first lace project and struggled through the whole thing and I can't figure out why. I finally finished it about 4 months ago and have as yet to block it. However I plodded forward and took on the Shetland Tea Shawl in a Gathering of Lace, and just blocked it. For some reason (maybe charts) that one went really smoothly for me. And I love the result. I'll be posting a picture of it soon. Good Luck!

The one in the book, done in a laceweight/almost fingering weight baby alpaca, is 16 st=5". I haven't yet seen that other gauge referenced on Ravelry--I'd be curious to know what kind of size shawl they ended up with. I do know of one Bigfoot done in a much larger gauge and yarn by a friend in my knitting group who is much larger than I, that was dense and wide even on her, exactly what she was going for. I've also knitted it in a finer yarn and smaller needles and gotten (other than the thicker neck edge) what turned out to be a wedding ring shawl, but quite narrower around, almost more like a shrug, good for tieing in front--so the pattern is pretty flexible.

Just a side note, for a larger person or when using a finer yarn or gauge than the original, I'd start at the stitch count of row 2 to widen the neckline.

Hope this helps!

I have a question about the Big Foot Shawl. In the book the gauge is 16sts=5". On Ravelry, the pattern gauge is 8sts.=1" Over a large amount of sttiches this could make a big difference. Which is correct? Thanks.

Yesterday was christmas. My order from Knitpicks came which held my cpy of "Wrapped In Comfort" , new wooden option needles and the dolphin gloss yarn needed to knit my very first lace shawl. Needless to say I love all my new "knitting goodies". Now, the serious part begins. Learning to knit lace. I started last nite to knitt a pattern gauge for "Julia's shawl "only to have frogged it after about 6 inches because I kept loosing my place. I went to bed working out the pattern stitches in my head. Tonight I'll start again practicing the pattern. Thanks again Alison at Knit Picks for your advise in helping me pick out book, yarn, etc. for my first lace knitting project. Hopefully I will get beyond the practice swatch soon and " get the shawl on the road."

Hi all. I bought Alison's book a couple of months ago, and have been working on the Peace of My Mind shawl for awhile now. I just started moving beyond the yoke a couple of days ago, and had a major booboo last night. I had done only half a row of the new pattern stitch the night before, and pushed the knitting down onto the circular needle to store overnight. When I picked it up again, I started knitting in the wrong direction for almost half a row... SHEESH, I've never done that before (I almost always finish a whole row at a time, but these shawl rows are very long). So, now I have to unknit, and I haven't used a lifeline. Wish me luck.

Thanks Allison, I believe I'll do your suggestion of the twin patterns of Julia, however, I might include the edge of the Michelle pattern for both as well. I'm not positive, but now I realized I don't have the correct needle lengths so I'll just have to order some more! Thanks again for your help and your wishes!!!

Here's one idea: if you did the Julia, you could use the same pattern and yarn for her and you but you could follow the pattern for the faster (ie smaller stitch count: the turquoise one in the book, at 241 stitches in the body) for her, and the larger version (385 stitches in the body) for you. Twins, sized to match.

You can just use those two as a template, too, if you want. Note that the lace stitch in the main body of the Julia is a 6+1, and some of the other shawls in the book have lace stitches in the main body that are 6+1 or 12+1; you can follow the directions for the Julias to the increase row after the yoke, and then swap in one of those other lace patterns that would fit. You could, after that increase row, follow the directions for the main body of the Michelle, the Constance, or of the Monterey. (I'll add quickly that the Monterey is emphatically NOT a simple knit, the others are much easier.)

And congratulations and best wishes on your upcoming wedding!
