I am currently designing a Metaphysical Recovery and Therapy Program at my studio- one of the therapy classes that i will be offering is Creative Art, specifically teaching people how to knit as a means to recovery.....how do you all use knitting for therapy?

If you want a project that works up quickly in a larger yarn and needle size, the kid mohair Julia is very simple, and does well in, say, worsted weight and (at my gauge) size 10s or 10.5s if you want to knit quickly so as to be making a lot of shawls. The Constance also has a smaller stitch count across.

Hi all - I have just joined the group. I have been knitting for 20-25 years and love lace. I also am a member of ravelry and the Shakespeare and lace group. We currently are working a a shawl inspired by Othello. I have just purchased the book so will look and see what I like. Karen

Yarn hugger, good luck with your shawl! I'm actually knitting that pattern right now too, for someone who loves turtles.

Pviglione97, there are so many potential variables here; what were the materials? What were the articles? Superwashed wool tends to stretch way out in the machine and bounce back when it dries, if that helps any.

The only washing of wools and handknits I do in a machine is to let it fill with lukewarm water, the washing machine otherwise empty. Then I let the water swoosh a moment with the soap, turn the machine off, put in my sweaters, be they handknit or otherwise, do the actual washing by hand, and let it spin--this is essential-- WITH THE WATER TURNED OFF so it doesn't spray during the spin cycle. This is essential to avoid felting or shrinking. I take the articles out of the machine to let it refill for the rinse, because agitation+temperature change+water=felting, ie, I don't want the motion of the falling water to felt or shrink my stuff. When the machine is full again, I put the objects back in, carefully swoosh it around again, and again let it spin with no water spraying. (My machine has a particular setting that does that.)

Note that you can felt wool with cold water just as easily as hot--it's having the wool change temperature suddenly while it's wet that's a problem, as is agitation. The finer the wool, the more susceptible to the effects of the agitation, in my experience.

I have started the water turtle shawl, so far so good. This is my first time doing lace by hand, I have done lace many times on my machines. I am using baby alpaca..
