Hi Everyone,
I'm new to this group, I made a simple shawl last year and now I am starting a prayer pocket shawl, its so pretty.I got the pattern from house of white birches..

My answer seems to have disappeared into the ether; if you get it twice, my apologies. So. What I'd do is wash a length of it in hot soapy water, and when it's dry, compare it to the yarn as it is on the cone. If it's thicker, if it's softer, than the cone has mill oils, which are like dried hair mousse and are used to keep the fibers from flying apart during the spinning process. You can knit it up like that, but softer yarn is more fun to work with, and gauge would be an issue. On the other hand, if it's better to you to go that way than hanking, washing, and re-balling all that yarn, go ahead with it as is.

It sounds though as if your yarn is already ready to go.

Thanks. I will do that.

One other question. I bought several cones of silk/cashmere (55/45) laceweight yarn. I am not sure if I need to scour them or not. How do yu determine if that is necessary? The person I bought it from wasn't sure, but didn't think it needed scouring because it was "soft and doesn't have a smell".

I think it's the silk rather than the seaweed you're smelling. Letting it air out should take care of it. And thank you for teaching that class!

Hi, all! I just found this group. I'm working on a Water Turtles Shawl that I started in a class that I was teaching. I'll need to let my students know about this group! (Sadly, the LYS that I was teaching at is up for sale.)

I also bought the Sea Silk yarn for the Michelle shawl. It is magnificent, and I can't wait to use it. But I find it still has a bit of 'fishy' smell to it. Is there something I should do to it before using it? Or will just airing it out take the smell away?

Any of their fingering weights should work well. If you use a finer yarn for a more ethereal effect, it will be lovely but not as wide around as the original and will need smaller needles, and I'd definitely start at row 2 so that the neckline doesn't come out too short. If you want to tie the ends in front on a short shawl, the laceweights are a good way to go. If you want it closer to the original, go for fingering weight.

I have just reeived my book and am interested in the peace of my mind shawl. Do you have sugestions regarding knit pick yarns as to which would be best for this project? Thanks Karen

I agree. I am a nurse and I taught the nurse I work with to knit. We knitted a couple of scarfs for our patient who had a horrible neck wound we were healing. she loved the thought and actually thought about joining our knitting group. Karen

I find that looking forward to surprising someone with something knitted just for them, the anticipating the look on their face or thinking about how they'll feel when they get a box in the mail, to be a good motivator both to keep knitting and as a way of making me feel good about everything on a hard day. As an example, a month ago I was sitting up way longer than I should have, after major surgery, knitting a lace scarf for a favorite nurse. You should have SEEN the look on her face when I handed it to her! I told her to rinse it and lay it flat if she wanted to see the pattern better, since I couldn't block it there. She loved it however it came; she was just ecstatic at being thought of and knitted for and that she actually had gotten to see part of its coming to be in that hospital room. And I went from grousing inwardly about my incision pains during the knitting to thinking, Wow. That was worth every second. Every single one.
