Welcome! Please let us know if there is any way we can help, K? I just cast on for my first practice sweater yesterday... finally. I LOVED all the things I learned in the Sampler... it was a little challenging in places but a great experience!

I'll be blogging my way through this first sweater like I did through the Sampler... I'm using nasty "left over" acrylic yarn to make it, but I'm more interested in getting the process down for this first one. My second sweater will be something awesome to work with! LOL! The Sampler has given me a ton more confidence than I would have had without it... enjoy that experience cuz you just learn SO much in two feet of knitting!!! LOL!

i just joined my first knit along. Had always wanted to do one.
Checked The Sweater Workshop out of the library last week and am working on the sampler. Already had decided I would like this book in my own library. Will order the book and yarn this afternoon or tomorrow after making a decision about yarn.

I am just about to rip out my sweater. It is too small and now that I look carefully at my tension swatch I think that I took the measurements from the wrong needle size. I shall increase needle size from 4.00mm to 4.5mm which should work out better. I have done all the calculations again - a major effort for this numerically challenged girl. It is in stripes (the Ring the Changes version) so will take a little while. Anyhow it gives me the opportunity to add a few stitches at centre front for the steek. Won't start on the body until I get Elisabeth Zimmerman's book Knitting Around, from the library. it is on hold for me and hopefully will be there tomorrow. I believe she deals with steeks in that book which I have not yet seen.

That's fine Bren... just get some generic, soft, worsted weight yarn... nothing special for either the Sampler or your first sweater with her technique... whenever... there's no clocks or calendars around here. :-)

I'll have to get the book and then get everything else I would need. Might take me awhile to get everything. ( Wait for payday) Hope that's ok with everyone.

I forgot to say that I did do the sampler and found it an enlightening exercise. I have knitted for more than 60 years but there is always something to learn.

Hi Everyone, I have just found this knit-along. I bought The Sweater Workshop just before Christmas and made a cardigan from it. It was a little on the small side - sleeves were probably an inch too short - but I can wear it. Now I am making a sweater which I hope to steek with a V-neck. This is going to take some concentrated planning. I have got up to the joining part. Unfortunately my needle points have come apart so I am waiting for replacements to arrive in a week or two. I am hoping someone will have some input regarding a V-neck steek.

I'm gonna assume you are speaking to me since I'm the most recent one to post here. :-)

I have enough Patons Canadiana that I way over-bought for an afghan, (I've already gotten 3 or 4 afghans out of it!), to make a "first ever learning" sweater. :-) The author caused me to realize that I'd be better off thinking of my first sweater as strictly a learning experience, an extension of the Sampler... and if I can wear it when I'm done, great. If not I can frog it and try again. I don't have any other specific plans for this yarn... except possibly yet another afghan, believe it or not... and it will frog easily if I run into any major problems, so it seems like a perfect first choice. They aren't colors I normally wear much, but if it comes out wearable at all, I will wear it! LOL!

What yarn are you using for your first sweater?
Elianastar Comment by Elianastar on February 19, 2009 at 2:06pm
Even if you didn't want to make a sweater, the Sampler is such an excellent basic to intermediate knitting skill-builder project that any knitter would benefit from doing it. I've read and talked to so many people who are intimidated by short rows or two strand knitting and several other things included in the Sampler, and I was intimidated by the Sampler because of the prejudices I'd formed based on what others had said about certain skills.

Then I did the Sampler... all of it... and I don't understand all the consternation. None of it was hard... a little challenging in places... but not hard. Maybe she just does a really good job walking you through it? I don't know.

I do know that I'll sit down with needles and yarn and actually try things in the future rather than assuming it is "too hard."

I don't know what I'll ever do with the "thing" (Sampler) now... but I sure know what I'll do with the skills and confidence I've gained from doing it! :-D
