I have taught myself using youtube videos how to knit a short row toe and a short row heel for my FIRST pair of socks BUT when I join the short row heel to the top of the sock it has a HOLE on both sides =[ What did I do wrong or how can I avoid this? I really like short rows & would like to avoid the gusset heel if possible. I am at a loss as to what went wrong...

Thank you for your time.

Well, since I don't typically do short rows, I can't say exactly, But when I do afterthought thumbs on mitts, I do the same thing I do when I join in the round. I add a couple of extra sts on each side. switch the first couple of sts on the needles and then k2tog at beginning and ending of rnd. That can help prevent holes. You can see my tutorial here.
