I am just starting the ears and I am wondering if I still do the provisional cast on & work 8 rows in st st. before going on with Cheryl's directions. Then do I continue with the main pattern instructions after doing the 6 decrease rounds Cheryl suggests.

Bonnie, I have gone back and read the directions to make sure I answer this correctly for you.

Yes, I still used the provisional cast on, but it is not absolutely necessary. The provisional cast on is to just give the finished edge a little nicer finish. If you have problems with provisional cast ons this edge can just be whipped together later.

I did my ears on DPNs which eliminated my confusion with the markers.

Follow Kerin's directions (except about the markers) until you begin the decrease stitches.

Then here are the notes I made to myself:

EARS
If you follow these rounds you don't need any markers. First, place provisional sts on dpns as follows:10 sts on first needle, 8 on second and 12 on third. Knit first row, then begin rounds. There will be rounds where you have to move sts between needles one and two. These represent the front of the ear and needle three represents the back. Knit 1 row and then 7 rnds then begin decreases.

LEFT EAR:
Rnd 1: k1, k2tog, k5, k2tog, k5, ssk, k2, k2tog, k6, ssk, k1.
Rnd 2: k6, k2tog, k17.
Rnd 3: k1, k2tog, k3, k2tog, k3, ssk, k2, k2tog, k4, ssk, k1.
Rnd 4: k4, k2tog, k13.
Rnd 5: k1, k2tog, k1, k2tog, k1, ssk, k2, k2tog, k2, ssk, k1.
Rnd 6: k2, k2tog, k9

RIGHT EAR:
Rnd 1: k1, k2tog, k6, ssk, k2, k2tog, k5, ssk, k5, ssk, k1.
Rnd 2: k17, ssk, k6.
Rnd 3: k1, k2tog, k4, ssk, k2, k2tog, k3, ssk, k3, ssk, k1.
Rnd 4: k13, ssk, k4.
Rnd 5: k1, k2tog, k2, ssk, k2, k2tog, k1, ssk, k1, ssk, k1.
Rnd 6: k9, ssk, k2.

NOTE: Front and back of left ear ended up on opposite needles from Kerin’s directions. So for 3 needle bind off it will be back needle with 18 sts and the 6 center sts on the three needle bind off will have one from the front and 2 from the back. (Looking at this note to myself, I'm not quite sure what I meant by 6 center sts on 3 needle bind off. Sorry.)

Attach ears with slight curve.
Thank you for replying so quickly. My Mr. Foster is very cute! I am giving him to my 10 month old nephew for christmas.
I made one in Lion Brand's Fishermen's Wool for my great nephew. Since the dolls I made for my nieces were never played with, I had to make my niece promise Mr. F could be dragged through the mud.
