Knitting Community

Hi all!!

I am looking for a nice knitting reference for my knitting library, and i'd like some reviews, comments, suggestions if anyone has any input for me :-)

My Maran guide to knitting and crocheting is an ok book, but it has photos of techniques, rather than line drawings. It turns out that line drawings are better than photos, IMHO. So that is something i'd like to see. And i'd like to see just alllll kinds of techniques, so a really all-encompassing guide!!! I think i have gotten all i can out of the maran guide, and lent it to a newbie friend :-)

So I have previewed the Knitting Bible by claire crompton, looks good. But might be a little too light, like my maran guide. I am also considering (but have not looked at):

**How to Knit: The Definitive Knitting Course Complete with Step-by-Step Techniques, Stitch Library, and Projects for Your Home and Family - Debbie Bliss

**the Vogue knitting guide, (this one sounds pretty awesome, but i am leary of vogue, from my sewing background... not my favorite company...)

**the 'Ultimate knitting bible" by sharon brant (this one has GREAT reviews)

**Knitter's Handbook : A Comprehensive Guide to the Principles and Techniques of Handknitting - Montse Stanley;

Any thoughts, comments, reviews? Having crochet instruction in it as well is OK. but not really necessary or a deciding factor. But having lots of techniques in detail (and line drawings instead of, or in addition to photos) is!! :-)
THANKS!!

I also like Knit Fix by Lisa Kartus and I keep Margaret Radcliffe's The Knitting Answer Book in my knitting bag; it's like a little encyclopaedia of knitting! --P
I also like Knit Fix. I learned so much from making the sweater sampler from the Sweater Workshop. I don't know if that book qualifies as a reference book but I it is for me. In fact, this past week I used it when I could not remember how to weave 2 colors in my most recent hat. I knew very little before making the sampler and the instructions were so detailed that I learned how to do two color knitting just by following the instructions in the book.

Thanks everyone!! I am putting those 2 books on my list of books to check out at the library. I have actually looked at the knitting answer book someone mentioned, i will look at it again and see if i should buy it!!
I'm dying to order Knitting Without Tears from KP. I have Knitting for Dummies and I checked out Stitch n Bitch from our local library and that was a great resource for me.
i will check the tear book out - i think i have that in my kp cart. I am out to the library today to see my choices... THANKs!!
Hey I was wonderinf if y'all know if any good teaching sock books.
This isn't a book but a website www.verypink.com. Stacey has a beginner sock pattern and then 6 step by step videos and it's what I used to make my first set. Be sure to check out Kelley's sock class here on the KP site :)
Cat Bordhi's Socks Soar on Two Circular Needles is great not just for learning to use two circs, but also has a basic sock pattern and gives instructions for knitting socks. I also like Charlene Schurch's Sensational Knitted Socks, which has the advantage of having charts you can use to make any sock any size using any gauge. If I need to get socks done in a hurry, using sport weight or even knitting worsted works well, and you can do it with her charts. She also has some really good instructions for basic sock knitting. I have a friend who swears by Getting Started: Knitting Socks by Ann Budd. I don't own it, but I've looked at it, and it has really good illustrations. There are lots of others out there, and most of them have basic sock-knitting instructions. I really recommend learning to use two circs or one long circ (for Magic Loop) when you learn to make socks. I think it's easier to get your head around the concept when you see the sock in two halves, instead of the sts on each needle. --P
Hello, just joined the group and a beginner. I actually taught myself to knit by watching some YouTube Videos and purchasing these books.
Guide to Knitting, by The Chicks with Sticks. This book is fantastic and would highly recommend it to a Beginner. The patterns are wonderful, the instructions are great and photos are fabulous.

Stitch'n Bitch, by Debbie Stoller. Another great book to have and tons of patterns to try out the various techniques.

400 Knitting Stitches, by Potter Craft. This book is small enough to put in your knitting bag and offers wonderul pictures, and a ton of pattern stitches.

The Knitter's Book of Yarn, by Clara Parkes. This book is great as far as learning about the various types of yarns, their weights, gauges, and has beautiful patterns. This is a great book if you want to learn about yarn and what it will do for you.

2 at a time Socks, by Melissa Morgan-Oakes. I just got this book and she teaches you how to do a pair of socks on 1 circular needle (40"). The instructions are wonderful, clear, and a beginner can do this.
There are some great books out there. We're living in a wonderful time for learning to knit! And youtube, too! It helped me learn to spin. Wish I had had it when I was learning to knit. I might have started making sweaters before I got to high school. --P
Yes, there is are many things for knitters now. Especially for beginners, which is just great. I am so amaze at how this art form has changed my life so much in just a couple of weeks. I hope to get as good as all of you are here. How freaking cool would that be? LOL

I must say, Youtube has helped me out a lot. It's what made me find a yarn shop that teaches near me so I could actually attend classes. I'm going tomorrow for my second class and I can't wait. LOL
Cheers
You're already good with your hands, so you should learn quickly. It's really good exercise for the brain, too!
