I received the Fall Season Shawl kit (40958) and started winding the yarn into balls.  The instructions say to use two strands of the color.

How do I wind the yarn (without a ball winder) to be able to knit two strands together?

I recently started this shawl. I streched the yarn between 2 dining chairs and wound it by hand into one large ball then wound a smaller ball off the bigger ball. I found this was faster than winding 2 smaller ones to begin with. I forgot to say to check the errata for this shawl as there are a few mistakes in the pattern.

Lynsey, I just posted How to Wind a Center Pull Ball by Hand? in the Ask the Fairy Godknitters group. You can always knit from the center and the outside of the ball. You might want to check it out.

This isn't the link someone posted when a couple of us were working that out when the pattern was originally kitted, but it should help. The result is a ball of yarn you can use to knit from both ends at the same time!

Oh, Mary, I didn't see you had posted this already!
That's okay! Night.

Can't you just use 2 balls at the same time? I see people put them into ziplock bags to keep them under control. I usually just let them run wild on the floor and untangle them periodically:-)

You could. I haven't looked at how the colors are done in the newer version, but in the first one, you used two different colors at the same time, changed to using only one color, then went to a new two-color blend, etc. up through. By making it possible to draw from either end of the ball, you might avoid a join or two later on when it takes more of the skein to finish a section of the pattern. Ultimately, it's your choice. Have fun with it - it's a gorgeous shawl.
Thanks all!!!!  Of course now I need to rewind several balls of yarn.  I can't wait to get this project ready for the start.
Glad we could be of help!
