Knitting Community

no pictures this week, because it looks pretty much the same as last week... I took a long weekend and went up to Seattle to see my mom... brought my knitting and got some of it done and then realized my count was off... so I ripped, and ripped, and then ripped some more... so depressing! by the time I left, I might have been 4 rows ahead... This is one of those patterns that I can't sit and talk while knitting... Every other Wednesday the Knit Picks team meets... all are knitting but me, I don't dare!!! My goal is to get a chunk done this weekend (and no ripping!!!!)!

Kim, I'm just following along right now. Too many other projects on my plate! Though I do intend to do one from this book eventually. But ripping just means you were practicing, right? I practice a lot!

that's a good way to look at it... a much more positive thought process, I like that... thanks!!!

I did make one positive move this week, I found the fabric I want to use to line my bag. I don't think the pattern calls for lining, but I thought it would be a more usable item with a fabric lining. Would help keep the bag from getting snagged on the inside and should help the bag keep it's shape better. I should be able to finally cast on the first of next week. I've been feverishly trying to finish a market bag to take to a fiber fest this coming Sunday. It's about finished and then I'll be able to spend more time on other projects. Can't wait!

love the fabric! and you're right, lining would probably make it more durable... have fun at the fiber fest!

Thanks! It's my first, I'm so excited!

That fabric is perfect! I love how it picks up the green of your yarn, and also complements it with the rust shades. You'll have to keep opening your bag so everyone can see the gorgeous lining! Let us see it when you've got it all put together.

Kim, I guess my Classic Lines Cardigan is my "knitting goes large" project for now. I'm going to enlarge that pattern when I finally get through knitting swatches. Still can't make up my mind about what color to use for the stripe....

Sorry about all your frogging! I hope you get to make progress this weekend. Good luck!

thanks... I didn't get as much knitting done this weekend (trying to get ready for a garage sale)... but what I did knit, I didn't have to rip out so this is a good thing!!!!

Okay, we’ve bantered about the frustrations of having to rip and how to feel good about it. Last night I was reading the August 2009 issue of Knit ‘n Style. In it Jack Lewis has an article on Nihon Vogue’s knitting school. It is on point with many of the different KAL discussions, so I’m copying this comment on the different KALs I’m in. He is writing about going to knitting school and expecting step by step instructions. I’d like to quote him:

“The first jolt was that learning by trial and error is a Nihon Vogue tradition. Jean [Wong] expects students to make mistakes, and doesn’t seem overly concerned whether our knitting detours and dead ends could have been prevented by explicit warnings. The idea is that we learn as much from doing something wrong as by getting it right the first time. We tear out and re-knit sections to better identify and clarify our misconceptions, which as a practice works quite well.”

I think the instructors point is that we learn better by doing and that making those mistakes teaches us the why not just the how. So keep on practicing!

I love it! What a wonderful way to teach! I (for the most part) am self taught. I can tell you I have far more projects started than completed because I ripped them all apart and started over. I have learned a lot this way. I guess the most important lesson for me is PATIENCE! I am so impatient, always have been. But I really need to rope it all in and "learn" that swatching is a good thing and not a waste of time.
Thanks for sharing that quote!

Yeah! After a false start (had the wrong needle size, arghh!) I finally have the bag cast on and the first row done. I'll work on it some more after I'm done on the computer, hard to stop right after you first get started, I love to see the pattern emerging. I put some pictures on the pictures thread of the incredibly large ball of yarn I'm working with. I hate joining pieces of yarn, so I made a 600 yard ball of yarn off the huge cone of this yarn that I have. It's better than trying to work off the cone, but is still a little rough to tote around!
