Any hints, suggestions or ideas for modifying patterns to your size?

Many times I'll see a pattern that I love and then see that it doesn't have my size... I'm thinking this is a common delema. There must be a formula or technique to modify a pattern to that perfect size... Any suggestions?

It has been a really awful week. All of the kittens died. I don't know why. They were fine, moving around the box, and then they were gone. I checked on them as I did often throughout the day and they were all cuddled up in the corner of the box, and then I realized that they were very still. The darker gray kitty was already stiffening, the lighter gray kitty had just died, and the little orange kitty died in my hands. It was so awful to hear the Mama kitty calling for her babies and looking for them. We got them out of the house and buried under my lilac bush, and the box they were in out of the house quickly, thinking this might help her, but it was still just terrible.

I am so sorry for this. The mama must be so confused and upset. So many things can be wrong, even when they are acting normal. Animals are so protective of their young, and when they are lost like this, the mamas just don't know what it going on.

How awful that it was all 3 of the kittens. Isn't that an unusually small litter? Mama must be devastated. I hope both you and she manage to get through this bad time.

Thanks to both of you for caring. Sweet Pea is doing a lot better, she's looking healthy and is interacting well with the other cats, even playing a bit with the others as well as the toys that litter our floors. I think she will be just fine.

I had submitted a suggestion that Knit Picks should include the size ranges in the info they give on pattern books, and mentioned that I had done so in a post in the Knit Picks Lovers group on Ravelry. My post was seen by a KP employee who will be working in that area, she thought it was a good idea and plans to work that into the info some how, either in the info on each book, or by creating a plus size section that would include the books/patterns for larger sizes. Now that's exciting!

Great idea, no matter what size we are.

That was my thought, xs must have the same problems as 3x. It's always those of use on either side of normal (whatever that is )who have a difficult time getting fitted. My current pet peeve is finding shoes my size. There's very little variety or style for those of us who have longer feet or in some cases wider feet, I guess I should start writing letters to those stores next.
