Knitting Community

Some of us in the Knitting Community have joined the "Flight Path" mystery Knitalong organized by Mary Scott Huff. If you're on Ravelry, you can find the Ravelry group here. I'm using Wool of the Andes Sport Weight in "Wonderland Heather," "Baltic Heather," "Saffron," "Fairytale" and "Avocado." We don't know at this point what the project will be, but it's an accessory for a woman. Here's my swatch:

Swatching instructions say to knit a swatch using the larger needles (I got gauge with size 4) working in the rnd or back and forth using two colors, any stranded pattern we wanted, since we don't have the chart yet. We're to aim for 6 1/2 sts/in. Sport weight or DK would be most suitable.

We will get one part of the pattern each week. Today (If you're reading this on Monday, January 30th) we get the first "clue." It will be fun to see what the project turns into. It isn't too late to join us if you want. It isn't a race. Just a fun thing to do together. All you need is the pattern (see link above) and 5 skeins of sport-weight yarn, each a different color. Just get your pattern and yarn and join us! We get the last clue February 27, 2012. You can buy the pattern later, but it will cost more, and you need to finish with the group to qualify for the drawings. (Yes, there are prizes!)

I'm concerned about the yarn amount, too!  After finishing the first clue, I had used 905 of the light turquoise and about 80% of the royal blue... I WILL not have enough to finish up.

Wow. I better watch my gauge then. I haven't even swatched yet. I was going to skip it because I am getting such a late start but I guess I better not.

I got gauge, and my finished Clue #1 is the same size as everyone else's - I don't think they sent enough yarn...

Oh my...mine look awfully small. I hope I got enough. I can't imagine what we are making that takes that tiny bit of yarn.

But it's a mystery. We don't know what comes next. Maybe she will move on to the other colors.

I think she mentioned in one of the Rav discussions, that we would use as much of the MC doing Clue #2... if that is the case, I'm out of luck!

I have 137 yds of each color, so I should be good.

Oh boy, did I have trouble casting this thing on. I must have started and restarted a million times. I always either got a giant hole or a big ugly bump. I ended up magic looping it for the first few rows and then changing over to the dblpoints as I found it was easier to "see" the pattern on the 3 needles. My stranding skills are a bit rusty so mine looks like the dog's breakfast, but it is done-until Monday, that is. I ended up with very little of the MC left and lots of blue.

One of the things I do when I cast on in the round on any type of project is to exchange the first and last stitches...this helps to close up that "hole" at the end of round...As I almost always use Magic Loop, I place the first stitch (front needle) at the end of the other stitches (onto the back needle), then take the last stitch cast on (back needle) and put it at the beginnning (first stitch on the front needle)... it's a fiddly solution, but it always works.

That's the solution Cat Bordhi suggests. I recently read another one..l think maybe in Charlene Schurch's newer "Sensational Knitted Socks" book. You CO an extra st, then K the first and last st together. For socks, though, I just leave the stair-step until the end and then sew the tail in in a way that makes the top look like a continuous round. You can't see it when I'm done. That only works with long-tail CO, though.

Well I'm glad I'm not the only one who had some trouble with the cast on.  I ended up using the Emily Ocker cast on Cheryl talked about, but needed different video demonstration to see what to do with my hands.  Very clumsey with a crochet hook here - lol.

Peggy - what type of cast on did you use?

I had some trouble with the CO. I used two circs, and once I got something to hold onto, it got easier. "The dog's breakfast!" ROFL!
